Gerhard Reinert (diplomat)

Gerhard Reinert (born January 24, 1928 ; † August 1, 2005 ) was a German diplomat . He was the GDR's ambassador to the Hungarian People's Republic and the People's Republic of Bulgaria .

Life

Reinert, born as the son of a working-class family, was a Reichsbahn employee and an official of the Free German Youth (FDJ). From 1950 to 1955 he was a member of the agitation and propaganda department in the Central Council of the FDJ. He became a member of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany .

In 1955 he joined the diplomatic service of the GDR. From 1955 to 1957 he was an employee in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the GDR (MfAA). He completed a correspondence course at the German Academy for Political Science and Law in Potsdam-Babelsberg , graduating with a degree in political science and worked in leading positions abroad from 1958 to 1962, including serving as the second secretary at the GDR embassy in Budapest . From 1962 to 1964 he was section head in the MfAA, then studied in 1965/1966 at the diplomatic academy in Moscow . From 1967 to 1970 he was again an employee of the MfAA, where, among other things, he was deputy head of the Second European Department (“Neighboring Countries”). From 1970 to 1974 he worked as counselor at the embassy of the GDR in Prague , where he was also chargé d'affaires. From 1974 to 1979 Reinert Ambassador of the GDR was in Budapest, then from 1979 to 1981 head of the group RGW in MFAA. From 1981 to 1983 he was the GDR's ambassador in Sofia . From 1983 he was again active as head of the Comecon working group in the MfAA.
