Sepp Schwab (born January 16, 1897 in Munich , † July 30, 1977 in Berlin ; born Max Joseph Schwab ) was a German journalist , diplomat and politician ( USPD , KPD , SED ).

Life

As a commercial clerk, Schwab joined the Socialist Workers' Youth in 1913 . In 1917 he became a member of the USPD and in 1919 the KPD. During the Munich Council Republic he was a member of the Council Government. After their defeat, he was in 1919 to four years imprisonment convicted.

After his release he worked for the communist Neue Zeitung in Munich in 1924/25 . After serving another prison sentence, he took over the management of the press service at the Central Committee of the KPD in 1927. From 1930 to 1936 he was a member of the German Department of the Executive Committee of the Comintern in Moscow . From 1938 he headed the Germany department of Radio Moscow .

After the end of the Second World War, Schwab came into the Soviet occupation zone in 1945 . Together with Max Nierich (SPD) he became the first editor-in-chief of the daily newspaper Neues Deutschland , which first appeared on April 23, 1946 in Berlin. In August 1946 he was replaced by Lex Ende .

On July 1, 1949, Schwab became deputy to the Soviet head of the DEFA board, Alexander N. Andrijewski. Until 1952 he was director of DEFA, then head of the State Committee for Film.

In 1954 he was appointed Ambassador of the GDR to Hungary. From 1956 to 1965 he was Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of the GDR .

On May 6, 1955, Schwab was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in silver.
