The Association of the Chemical Industry V. ( VCI ) is the trade association for the chemical industry in Germany, based in Frankfurt am Main . The VCI is a registered association and a member of the Federation of German Industries . He represents the interests of the industry towards politics and authorities as well as other areas of economy, science and the media. As a member of the European chemical association CEFIC (European Chemical Industry Council) he is actively involved in European lobbying. International issues are coordinated via the International Council of Chemical Associations , in which the VCI is also involved. The association is a member of the energy-intensive industries interest group in Germany .
history
The association was founded as an association to protect the interests of the chemical industry in Germany on November 25, 1877 in the Hotel Frankfurter Hof in Frankfurt am Main, based in Berlin. The first chairman was Fritz Kalle and the first managing director Otto Wenzel . In the 1920s Carl Duisberg was chairman and Franz Oppenheim treasurer.
With around 1,700 member companies, more than 90 percent of the sales of German chemical manufacturers are represented in the association. With a further 27 professional associations and associations, the VCI is one of the four largest industrial associations in Germany. In 2019, around 464,000 people were employed in the German chemical industry, and several hundred thousand jobs at suppliers depend on the industry. Chemical products worth around 178 billion euros were exported in 2015. In 2019, the industry had sales of around 198 billion euros. Around 11.8 billion euros flowed into research in 2018. German chemical companies invested 7.1 billion euros in property, plant and equipment in Germany.
Hans Van Bylen , Chairman of the Board of Management of Henkel , has been President of the Association since September 28, 2018 . The seat of the association is Frankfurt am Main . The general manager is Wolfgang Große Entrup.
