Association of the German paint and printing ink industry

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Association of the German Paint and Printing Ink Industry eV (VdL), until 2008 the Association of the German Paint Industry , is the largest trade association for the paint industry in Germany. He has also represented the interests of the printing ink industry since 2009. Taken together, the industry represents a turnover of 7.5 billion euros and employs 25,000 people. The VdL essentially represents the interests of German paint, paint and printing ink manufacturers in politics and the public. The tasks of the association include, among other things, the professional support of the members in questions of technical legislation, in the field of environmental and health protection as well as standardization, product liability and quality assurance, training and the promotion of young talent.

On January 1, 2009, the VdL merged with the Association of the Printing Ink Industry (VdD).

organization

The VdL currently has 183 members and 20 extraordinary members. Among other things, the world's largest paint manufacturers such as AkzoNobel and BASF Coatings are organized in the VdL , as are a large number of medium-sized companies. Peter Jansen has been President of the VdL since May 2018 , and Dr. Martin Kanert .

The VdL is divided into 4 sectors.

  • Building colors
  • Industrial paints (performance coatings)
  • Printing inks
  • Powder coatings

The VdL is an independent professional association in the Association of the Chemical Industry and a member of the European umbrella organization CEPE .

aims

According to the statutes, the VdL was the "economic interest group for the paint industry in Germany" . The aim was "to perceive and promote the general, non-material and common economic interests of the coatings industry to the exclusion of any commercial business" .

history

The VdL was founded under the name VDL on October 15, 1900 in the Hotel Taunus in Frankfurt am Main . Of 101 German paint manufacturers invited, 41 finally joined forces to form the VDL, the first national German paint association to date. The first chairman was Louis Mann. At this early point in time, the association was heavily involved in politics. In 1902, for example, the customs tariff was lowered and the import duties for foreign paints increased, and in 1915, during the First World War, a boycott of foreign paints was called for. After the war, Louis Mann rose to become a member of the Reich Commissariat for the Transitional Economy and in this position saved the existence of many paint factories that were about to go bankrupt.

On January 22nd, 1935, the National Socialists forcibly transferred the association to the paints section of the Chemical Industry Economic Group. The association's previous autonomy was of course canceled. On March 16, 1948, the association was reorganized under the name Arbeitsgemeinschaft Lackindustrie with an impressive 480 member companies. Of these, 370 companies ultimately form the founding members of today's VdL .

In the 1960s, the VdL did very strong press and public relations work. As a consequence, the German Paint Institute was founded in 1969 , which is exclusively responsible for public relations. During this time, the VdL logo was created, which was presented in Berlin on April 23, 1964.

In recent times, the VdL has been heavily involved in the positions of the paint industry in environmental policy , e.g. B. in the discussion about REACh In essence, a moderate adjustment of the regulations is required, since changes in the legislation that are too large can rarely be implemented quickly. On the subject of REACh and nanoparticles , the VdL currently takes the position that the existing legislation is already sufficient, as REACh covers all areas (including nanoparticles).

On January 1, 2009, the VdL merged with the Association of the Printing Ink Industry (VdD) to form the new association of the German paint and printing ink industry . This was achieved through the admission of the members of the VdD and the subsequent renaming.

activities

education

An important goal of the VdL is to combat the lack of know-how and skilled workers in the paint industry, which has always been (and still is) lamented. They had their own laboratories even before the Second World War. 1951 contributed to the fact that the profession of paint laboratory technician is recognized. In the same year, the Stuttgart Institute for Paints and Building was founded with the strong participation of the VdL. Paint-specific courses of study were also gradually introduced in Krefeld , Esslingen and Paderborn . With the organization of congresses, seminars and specialist conferences, the VdL also contributed to the further development of the knowledge available in the paint industry.

Major environmental actions

As part of the Farb 84 trade fair, the voluntary agreement on solvent reductions was presented, which provided for a reduction in the (environmentally hazardous) proportion of solvents by 20 to 25% within 5 years. The main goal was to attack the prejudice “paint is poison”, which is still present today, and which still persists despite many new developments such as powder paints , low- VOC and water-based paint systems.

In 1995, an environmental guideline called Coatings Care was introduced , which was based on the Responsible Care guideline of the general chemical industry . The aim was to show the public that the coatings industry takes responsibility for its actions.

VdL guidelines

The VdL has published 7 guidelines. These serve to promote responsible care and sustainable development . In detail, these are the following topics:

  • Plant security
  • environmental Protection
  • Employee training
  • Product stewardship
  • Resource conservation
  • Safe handling
  • disposal

particularities

The association made two image films: The protective hand was premiered at the General Assembly in Berlin's Marble House in 1929 and was shown in more than a thousand cinemas in 1930. The second film, Lack - A cultural film about the magic and benefits of a material in old and new times , was released in German cinemas in 1966. It ran nationwide as a supporting film for Rififi in Paris and reached over a million viewers.
