Company history

The root of BASF Coatings GmbH is Max Winkelmann AG, which was founded in 1888 by Max Winkelmann (1862–1938) in Hamburg . The main business area was the production of varnishes and paints . In addition to the headquarters in Hamburg at the time, Winkelmann founded a branch in Hiltrup in 1903 , which is now part of the Westphalian Münster . In 1904 the plant's landmark, the water tower, which still stands today, was built. This branch later became the headquarters and is now one of the most important employers in Münster.

In 1889 the company name (company) was changed to "Glasurit" and protected by an imperial patent. The name is supposed to describe the glaze-like hard coating of the paint. In 1908 the company was converted into a stock corporation with the company Glasurit-Werke Max Winkelmann AG with 1.8 million gold marks in initial capital. After the paint became increasingly popular, Max Winkelmann was looking for a symbol for his company. In 1925 it was decided to use the scarlet macaw with its striking colors as its trademark.

After the Second World War, Glasurit became the main supplier to the German automotive industry . At the same time, the company developed into the largest paint manufacturer in the world. The descendants of Max Winkelmann decided in 1965 to sell the company to BASF for 250 million marks. Further acquisitions, such as the Dr. Beck & Co. AG, specialist in insulating varnishes and insulation materials for the electrical industry, and Herbol-Werke Herbig Haarhaus AG in 1968 strengthened the company. In 1985 there was a further expansion through the acquisition of the Inmont company. The portfolio was repeatedly supplemented by smaller takeovers. The last major acquisition was the paint activities of NOF Corporation (Nippon Oil and Fat) in Japan and the Relius Coatings company based in Oldenburg, formerly part of Degussa Construction Chemicals. The “Glasurit” brand was also licensed to AkzoNobel for building coatings .

On December 14, 2009, the company announced the change of legal form to GmbH . The company has been trading under the name BASF Coatings GmbH since March 1, 2010.
