PPG Industries ( PPG by Pittsburgh Plate Glass Co) is a United States manufacturer of art glass and chemical products headquartered in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania at the high-rise PPG Place . The company is listed in the S&P 500 and employs around 47,000 people.

It was founded in Pittsburgh in 1883 under the name Pittsburgh Plate Glass Co. (German about Pittsburgh Flachglas-Werke ).

history

In the automotive sector of Europe (Peugeot, Renault and others), the competitors Hoechst AG (Division G) and the French PPG INDUSTRIES FRANCE shared the available capacities from 1980–1995. In Germany z. B. in Wuppertal, represented by PPG Industries Lackfabrik GmbH, formerly Lackwerke Wülfing.

In October the Group's glass division was sold to its Mexican competitor Vitro . In January 2019, PPG took over the German paint manufacturer Hemmelrath.

The product areas include non-mineral glasses for motor vehicles, glass fibers, flat glass, and shatterproof glasses for the automotive and aerospace industries. In addition, synthetic resins, paints and car paints, chemicals and coating materials for space travel, architecture and industry are produced.

PPG was also partly active in the field of medical technology . At the end of the 1970s, the company bought the German manufacturer Fritz Hellige & Co. GmbH , which from then on operated under the name PPG Hellige. In 1996 this division was sold to Marquette Medical Systems .

Others

In 1987, as a sponsor of the American cart races , PPG commissioned the Ferrari study Ferrari PPG as a pace car for the 1988 season. The vehicle was designed by the Italian company IDEA as a 2 + 2-seater based on the Mondial floor assembly using weight-reducing carbon and kevlar fiber-reinforced plastics.

PPG supported the CART racing series by providing pace cars . The best known was the Dodge M4S , which was developed between 1981 and 1984 in collaboration with Chrysler and the engineering company Specialized Vehicles, Inc. (SVI) . The concept car was also the inspiration for the movie car in the movie Interceptor .
