  • January 19 : The German passenger steamer Cimbria sinks after a collision near Borkum , killing 437 people.
  • July 28 : An earthquake on Ischia destroys 1,200 houses in Casamicciola Terme and Lacco Ameno and kills 2,000.
  • August 27th : The Indonesian volcano Krakatau erupts. A tsunami follows with 40 meter high waves within a radius of 80 km. In total there are about 36,000 dead.
  • September 2 : Between 39 and 70 people are killed in the Steglitz railway accident.
  • November: The steamers 'Rhone' and 'Cygne' collide on Lake Geneva , 14 people lose their lives.
