Alexandru Zirra

Alexandru Zirra (born July 14, 1883 in Roman ; † March 26, 1946 in Sibiu ) was a Romanian composer .

Zirra attended the Conservatory of Iași from 1902 to 1905 and then studied with Carlo Gatti in Milan . From 1907 to 1925 he taught music theory in Iași, then he founded an institute for music and theater in Chernivtsi , which he headed until 1935. After teaching again at the Conservatory of Iași, he became director of the Opera Națională București in 1941 . He composed several operas , three symphonies and five symphonic poems , chamber music works, a cantata and songs .
