Roman ( German  Romesmarkt , Hungarian Románvásár ) is a town in the Romanian region of Moldova and is located 46 kilometers east of Piatra Neamț in the Neamț district .

It had about 69,500 inhabitants in 2003 and is located at the confluence of the Siret and Moldova rivers . It is generally believed that the name comes from Prince Roman I. Mușat (ruled 1391-1394), who may have founded this city.

history

  • The first traces of mentioning the city can be found between 1387 and 1392 in the Novgorod Chronicle.
  • In 1392 the city is mentioned in a Moldovan document.
  • In 1408 Alexandru cel Bun ( Alexander the Good ) established a bishopric in the city.
  • Ștefan cel Mare (Stephen the Great) is building a new fortress on the left side of the Siret River and replacing the old system consisting of earth walls.
  • In 1476 the Turkish army, led by Mehmed II, storms the new fortress; the importance of the Principality of Moldova is waning.
  • 1675 The stone fortress is destroyed by Dumitrașcu Cantacuzino , just like all other fortresses in Moldova.
