Vaslui [ vasˈluj ] ( German Wassluy ) is a city in Romania and is the capital of the district of the same name . The city had about 70,000 inhabitants in 2007.
history
The city is first mentioned in 1435, when Iliaș I became the Voivode of the Vltava . In 1439 and 1440 the Tatars conquered the Vltava River and the city burned down. On January 10, 1475, the Moldovan prince Ștefan cel Mare defeated an Ottoman invasion army in the battle of Vaslui . A large Jewish community existed in the city . This was decimated in the Holocaust and later emigration in the communist era.
economy
The unemployment rate in Vaslui was 15.1% in mid-2003, making it one of the highest in the country.
The abundance of red deer creates a modest hunting tourism.
Sports
The FC Vaslui is a football team in the Romanian Liga 1 .
Attractions
Outstanding sights include the ruins of the Prince's Palace and the Sf. Ioan Baptist Church ( Tăierea Capului Sf. Ioan Botezătorul , built in 1490). Both were built by Ștefan cel Mare ( Stephen the Great ). The Mavrocordat Palace (today “Palatul Copiilor”), built in 1890 by a successor to Prince Constantin Mavrocordat .
