Murgeni is a small town in Vaslui County in Romania .
location
Murgeni is located in the Moldau Plateau ( Podișul Moldovei ) on the Elan - a right tributary of the Prut -, only a few kilometers west of the Moldovan border. The district capital Vaslui is located about 70 km northwest of Murgeni.
history
The oldest archaeological finds in the region date from the Paleolithic . Murgeni was first mentioned in 1466 in a document from the Moldovan prince Ștefan cel Mare . The rural town developed into a local trading center and was elevated to a market in 1844. In 1908 a hospital opened. During the Second World War , half of the village caught fire in a bombardment. From 1950 to 1956 Murgeni was the seat of a Rajon in the course of the then administrative division of Romania . In 2003 the citizens of the municipality voted in favor of the city elevation, which was implemented a year later by resolution of the Romanian parliament.

At the 2002 census there were 7,674 people in Murgeni, including 6,627 Romanians and 1,046 Roma . About 3600 of them lived in Murgeni itself, the rest in the six incorporated villages.
In 2011 of the 7119 people, 4947 identified themselves as Romanians and 1384 as Roma.
traffic
Murgeni is on the railway line from Bârlad to Fălciu . Currently (2009), however, only two local trains run in both directions each day. There are bus connections to Galați . The national roads ( drum național ) DN 24A from Bârlad to Huși and the DN 26 from Murgeni to Galați run through the city .
