The gray dwarf hamster ( Cricetulus migratorius ), also Armenian hamster, is a species of hamsters (Cricetinae) belonging to the genus gray dwarf hamsters ( Cricetulus ).

description

The body length is 8.7 to 13.4 centimeters, the tail measures 2.2 to 3.7 centimeters. The gray dwarf hamster has a hind foot length of 1.5 to 1.7 centimeters and a weight of 33 to 38 grams. The eyes and ears are relatively large. The upper side has a pale gray to ocher sand color, the underside is white or white-gray. The hairs usually darken along the backbone.

The gray dwarf hamster has its main occurrence in subtropical Asia. The distribution area extends from Eastern Europe to Western China. It was only discovered in south-east Bulgaria in 1959, and in 1962 its remains were also found in the owl forests of north-east Romania . He has not been reported from Greece since about 1973.

Way of life

He lives in overgrown slopes and heaps in the tree steppe, in gardens and cornfields and does not hibernate. This species lives on grains and seeds, and occasionally insects and snails. The building with one to five entrances is at a depth of 0.5 to one meter. In addition to the nest chamber, a pantry is created. The stock quantity is 400 to 500 grams. The nest consists of stalks and stalks, sometimes feathers and sheep's wool.
