Between August 1979 and April 1980, the Deutsche Taschenbuchverlag (dtv) published a licensed edition that was an unchanged reprint of the Kindler edition from 1975 to 1977. Due to the much cheaper paperback layout, it was particularly widespread.

The German edition has also been translated into English. From 1972 to 1976, the first English translation was published in 13 volumes under the direction of George M. Narita. Under the direction of Michael Hutchins, a 17-volume completely rewritten and considerably expanded edition was created ( Grzimek's animal life encyclopedia 2nd edition ) and published in 2003 by Gale Cengage. In this edition, particular emphasis was placed on updating the zoological system. Since autumn 2009, Gale Cengage has also offered the encyclopedia in an online version for subscribers.

In 2008 the complete German-language edition was published by Verlag Zweausendeins as a special volume in the digital library on DVD .
