Heinz-Sigurd Raethel

Heinz-Sigurd Raethel (born October 18, 1920 in Berlin-Spandau ) is a German ornithologist and veterinarian . His main interests are chicken birds , ducks and research into avian diseases.

Life

After graduating from high school in 1939 and completing the Reich Labor Service , Raethel enrolled at the veterinary faculty of Berlin's Friedrich Wilhelm University . He was drafted and wounded during World War II. After studying veterinary medicine at the Army Veterinary Academy, he was reappointed to the front. In 1945 Raethel was taken prisoner by the Soviets, which he spent in the Azerbaijani Soviet Republic . Here he had the opportunity to study the fauna and flora in the forest and steppe and to capture them in sketches and watercolors. In 1948 he was released from captivity and returned to Berlin. After an assistant position in a rural practice in Nauen , Raethel worked as a veterinarian for the Berlin Zoological Garden from 1956 , where he dissected the dead animals until his retirement in 1985. He then worked on the supervisory board of the Berlin Zoological Garden in the role of scientific advisor. In 1979 he became veterinary director and head of the department for pathology and animal disease hygiene in the Berlin State Veterinary Investigation Office.

Raethel carried out research in the field of bird diseases, about which he wrote several papers. Furthermore, identification books on birds and bird keeping belong to his bibliography. He is the author of several bird books and numerous publications in specialist magazines such as Gefiederte Welt and Die Aviere . In 1972 he was responsible for the chapter on pheasants in Grzimek's animal life . In 1980 he dealt with wild pigeons and in 1988 with ornamental and domestic ducks. Also in 1988 came out his best-known and most important work Die Hühnervögel der Welt , which is based on the book Fasanen und other Hühnervögel by Curt von Wissel and Max Stefani , first published in 1940 . In 1996 the book Quail - Partridge - Steinhühner - Frankoline was published . In 2003 he published a new edition of the work Water and Water Fowl, founded by Otto Franz .
