Die Gefiederte Welt is a monthly trade journal for bird lovers founded by Karl Ruß in 1872 , and has been published by Arndt Verlag since April 2019 . It is the oldest magazine of its kind that is still out in the world.

Content

The focus of the magazine is on all areas of keeping and breeding birds. It is a source for bird husbandry, aviculture, aviary building, feeding, and animal health techniques. It also reports on behavior, fauna and observations of the wild life of birds, ornithological travel reports and essays on species and bird protection. The magazine provides detailed information about the European and exotic bird life; all bird species are included. There are also numerous smaller sections with articles and photos from all areas of ornithology. The authors are experienced practitioners, specialists and scientists from all over the world. Readers' trips to unusual destinations are also offered irregularly. The classifieds market provides an insight into which bird species have been or are being bred and sold privately. The feathered world is recorded by the Zoological Record .

History and Development

The magazine was founded in 1872 by Karl Russ, who headed the editorial department until 1899, followed by Karl Neunzig in 1900. 52 issues were published annually in the Louis Gerschel publishing house, then since 1937/38 under the editorial direction of Joachim Steinbacher (briefly in Kretschmann Verlag) from 1938 to 1943 in the Creutzsche publishing house. The magazine was not published between 1944 and 1948, from 1949 to 1950 it was self-published by Steinbach, then subsequently by Schwinn & Helène (1950–1951), Gottfried Helène KG (1952–1972), VFV Verbands- and Fachzeitschriftenverlag (1973–1980) and finally by Verlag Eugen Ulmer (1981–2006). Steinbach was in charge of the editorial department until 2002, from 2003 this position was taken over by Dietmar Schmidt.

Acquisitions were made in 1926 with the magazine Der Vogelliebhaber and in 1964 with Vogel-Kosmos from Franckh'schen Verlagshandlung .

After the Aviary was taken over by Schaper Verlag in 2006 , the magazine was briefly named “Feathered World and the Aviary” from 2007 to 2008, but since 2008 it has been re-published under the name “Feathered World”.

In April 2019 the journal was taken over by Arndt-Verlag . The editor is René Wüst. Veterinarians and biologists as well as experts from the fields of bird keeping as well as field and zoo biology are represented in the Expert Council.
