- January 1st: The criminal law for all German federal states comes into force.
- January 1: The North German Measures and Weights Ordinance comes into force. This introduces the metric system in the German Empire; local and regional weights and measures are falling out of use.
- March 11: The Prussian School Supervision Act , which was enacted by Minister of Education Adalbert Falk at the instigation of Otto von Bismarck , abolishes church school inspection in the Kingdom of Prussia and places all schools under state supervision.
- March 11: The treason trial against August Bebel and Wilhelm Liebknecht begins in front of the jury in Leipzig because they had put forward a peace proposal in the Reichstag debate in 1870 about the granting of further funds for the Franco-Prussian War .
- July 4: The Jesuit Law bans establishments of the Jesuit Order throughout the German Empire .
- November 21: Otto von Bismarck is relieved of his position as Prime Minister of Prussia for health reasons . His request to be released is denied.
