Life
Sobinow was the son of a Yaroslavl merchant. At the age of 18 he moved to Moscow , where he first studied law at Lomonosov University . Parallel to this study, which Sobinow completed in 1894, he used his musical talent and took part in a student choir, since the end of 1892 he studied singing at the Moscow "School of the Philharmonic". During this time Sobinow was already successfully performing with an Italian opera company. In 1897 he completed his training and was allowed to appear on the stage of the Moscow Bolshoi Theater a short time later . He mainly sang well-known lyric tenor roles , including the role of Lensky in Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin , the Prince in Dargomyschski's Russalka or Pseudodimitri in Mussorgsky's Boris Godunow . On the Bolshoi stage, Sobinow also appeared together with the famous bassist Chaliapin in Gounod's Faust .
In 1901 Sobinow made his debut in what was then the Russian capital of Saint Petersburg . In the course of the 1900s he made numerous guest appearances in several European countries and was engaged at Milan's Teatro alla Scala from 1904 to 1906 . In 1909 he returned to Moscow and sang again on the Bolshoi stage. 1917–1918 and from 1921 he was also the director of the Bolshoi Theater. In 1923 Sobinow was awarded the honorary title of People's Artist of the RSFSR . He performed on the opera stage until 1933; Most recently he was deputy head of the art department of the Stanislawski Opera Studio . Sobinov's tomb is located in the cemetery of the New Maiden Convent in Moscow. Numerous streets in Russia as well as the conservatory in the city of Saratov were named after Sobinov . At the end of 2007, a monument with a life-size sculpture of the singer was erected in his hometown of Yaroslavl .
The asteroid 4449 got its name in 1987.
