Ginza ( Japanese 銀座 ) is a well known as a major business and entertainment district district of Tokyo borough Chūō with a variety of restaurants , theaters , department stores , luxury boutiques, showrooms, art galleries , night clubs and hotels .

location

The district is bounded in the north, west and south by the Tōkyō Kōsokudōro motorway and in the east by the Tokyo C1 city motorway . Numerous international fashion and luxury goods brands have their branches on Chūō-dōri ( 中央 通 り , ' central street ', also called 銀座 通 り , Ginza-dōri ), the central street of Ginza, and its partly nameless side streets . At the intersection of Chūō-dōri and Harumi-dōri are the well-known high-end department stores Wako and Mitsukoshi as well as the cylindrical San'ai building with numerous neon signs and the Nissan Gallery . The otherwise passable Chuo-dōri is closed to cars at the weekend and is transformed into a pure pedestrian zone with umbrellas and chairs set up in the middle of the street . The Ginza line of the Tōkyō Metro runs under the Chuo-dōri .

Tokyo Station is north of the Ginza . Several subway lines also meet in Ginza, including the Ginza line , the oldest subway in Tokyo, which is also named after the district.

history

Ginza was one of the first districts in Tokyo to be wrested from Tokyo Bay . In 1612 in the Edo period , a silver mint was founded in this area, from which the name Ginza ( gin 'silver' and Za 'place, warehouse') is derived. After Ginza burned down completely in 1872, the area was completely rebuilt by British architect Josiah Conder and engineer Thomas J. Waters . They widened the street from 12.6 to 27 meters and erected a long line of two-story brick buildings with balconies in front of the wide sidewalks on which there were gas lamps. Following the example of Paris and London , the first promenade in Japan was created. After initial difficulties, mainly due to the high prices of the new buildings, the Tokyo residents soon felt at home in the new district, and nothing stood in the way of the further development into an entertainment district. In the early twentieth century, however, Asakusa was the most popular entertainment district in Tokyo, and Ginza did not advance to first place until the post-war period.

Today the name Ginza has become synonymous with shopping street , so there are now ginzas all over Japan.
