history

Prada boutique in Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan

The company, originally known as Fratelli Prada (German 'Prada Brothers'), was founded in 1913 by Mario Prada and his brother Martino. In the same year a shop was opened in the elegant Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan . Initially, Prada focused on the manufacture and sale of exclusive leather goods such as gloves , bags and cases . Fratelli Prada was appointed supplier to the royal court in 1919, which is still reflected today in the company's expanded logo, which depicts the coat of arms of the House of Savoy and four eight knots (Savoy knot).

After Mario Prada's death in 1958, his daughter Luisa took over the management of the company. In 1978 the granddaughter of the company founder, Miuccia Prada (* 1949), together with her siblings Alberto and Marina, inherited the company from their mother Luisa, who withdrew from the company, thus establishing the successful expansion into a fashion company. It wasn't until 1983 that a second Prada store opened in Via della Spiga in Milan. Miuccia Prada earned her reputation through the creative use of different fabrics and the simple, modern lines of her collection from 1985 with shiny black handbags made of parachute nylon . These novel bags quickly became extremely popular everywhere and spawned a global counterfeiting industry of counterfeit Prada products.

With the takeover of company management by Miuccia Prada, the venerable, formerly staid leather goods company transformed into one of the world's leading fashion groups in just a few years. Miuccia Prada met the Italian businessman and then owner of a leather goods company in Arezzo , Patrizio Bertelli , at a fashion fair in Milan in 1978, recruited him as a supplier for Prada and married him in 1987. Bertelli, a manager notorious for his temperament , made a major contribution to the company's economic success and is CEO of the Prada Group. Miuccia Prada is chief designer and chairman of the board of directors . The Belgian designer Raf Simons has been co-creative director in a dual leadership with Miuccia Prada since April 2020 .

In 1984, Miuccia Prada presented a high-priced black backpack (model 'Vela') made of the waterproof nylon material Pocone with the Prada logo in the form of an upside-down silver-colored triangle , which after a few years sold so well internationally and became a prestige object advanced that the simple design was extended to purses and travel bags made of the same material. Miuccia Prada designed handbags made of Pocone , originally the material for the protective covers of leather goods, as early as 1978.

The opening of exclusive Prada stores from the early 1980s made a decisive contribution to the Prada's growing reputation . Prada's first ready-to-wear - collection for women in 1988 - designed by Miuccia Prada for the autumn / winter season of 1989 - at the initiative of Patrizio Bertelli. Until then, the company had not produced any clothing and only started producing women's shoes in 1979 . The simple, puristic and modern lines of this collection in muted colors contrasted sharply with the shrill and sexualized designs of other brands of the time and after a few years led to a steep increase in the popularity of the Prada brand.

In the early 1990s, Prada achieved its predominance in fashion with a look aimed primarily at young, fashionable women, which is associated with thick glasses, downright stale fabrics and cuts in retro style and bright colors and is known under the term "Prada Ugly" ( dt. 'Prada-ugly') became known. In 1993 the minimalist Prada men's collection was added, which was designed by the British designer Neil Barrett until 1999 . Prada has a definite and deliberately intellectual approach to the concept of fashion. In 1993 and 2004, Miuccia Prada won the International Award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America in New York City . 2004 expressed the influential editor in chief of American Vogue , Anna Wintour , compared with Miuccia Prada: "You are the only reason why we all [the international press] Milan [to fashion shows ] come".

In 2000 the first collection of sunglasses and prescription glasses was launched under the name Prada. Although Prada remains at the forefront of contemporary fashion, the company makes the majority of its revenue from the original leather goods store, selling shoes and handbags. Miuccia Prada is skeptical about the Internet and so the Prada website , although online since 1997, was not provided with content until the mid-2000s; it has had its own online shop with a narrow range since 2007. The Prada fashion shows have also been accessible online since the late 2000s . 85% of Prada fashion is produced in Italy (“Made in Italy”) and is located in the top price segment.

At the end of 2010 the Prada Made In ... project was started, with which other manufacturing countries, such as India , Japan , Scotland or Peru are expressly mentioned on the label of the respective article and in the context of which Miuccia Prada announced: “[The project] takes the whole thing the hypocrisy. […] Made in Italy - who cares? ”The first Prada perfume , the Prada women's fragrance , was presented in 2004 in collaboration with the Spanish PUIG group. The men's fragrance Prada Man followed in 2006. Since then, other fragrances from Prada have appeared.

From 2007 to the end of 2009 there was a collaboration with the South Korean mobile phone manufacturer LG for the production and sale of Prada mobile phones (models LG KE850 and LG KF900 ). The collaboration was renewed at the end of 2011 in order to bring the Android phone Prada Phone by LG 3.0 onto the market in 2012 .

Prada Linea Rossa (formerly: Prada Sport)

Shoes from the Prada Linea Rossa collection

In 1997 the sporty Prada Sport collection was launched as an extension of the main line and as a mix between everyday and sportswear for women and men and presented at the Pitti Immagine . A trademark is the Prada lettering on a mostly red background, which is often sewn onto the garments as a distinguishing feature. In 2006 the collection, which is priced below the main line Prada, was renamed Prada Linea Rossa (engl .: 'red line'). The majority of the sneakers in this collection are made in Vietnam . There is currently no website for the Prada Linea Rossa label . The collection items are integrated into the main collection at the Milan fashion shows.

Miu Miu

Logo of the Prada brand Miu Miu

In addition to the original, high-priced Prada line, the company introduced the Miu Miu women's collection in 1993 , a slightly cheaper second line for a younger audience. The Miu-Miu line, whose name goes back to the nickname of Miuccia Prada, emphasizes earth colors and less a couture style and evokes memories of an overall rather unconventional style. The Miu-Miu line uses the appearance of very young models in a home environment in advertising campaigns to highlight the unconventional aspects of this clothing line. The clothes are often kept simple and are permanently reminiscent of exclusive and at the same time "old-fashioned" clothes in retro style.

From 2006 the collections were shown at the Paris prêt-à-porter shows . The Miu Miu collection for men, launched in 1998, was discontinued in 2007 with the S / S 2008 collection to focus on women's fashion. Miu Miu is mainly produced in Italy; some of the handbags come from production facilities in Turkey and Romania . The women's label Miu Miu has its own website.

Prada concern

The Prada SpA belongs among other companies to 95% for Prada Holding BV , which is owned by the family Prada Bertelli (Miuccia, Alberto and Marino were indirectly 65% to IPO, Patrizio Bertelli owns 35%). The remaining 5% of Prada SpA was bought by Banca Intesa in July 2006 for 100 million euros . After the IPO, the stake held by Banca Intesa decreased to just under 1%. Bertelli had already planned an IPO for Prada before 2001 and attempted three attempts in the following years - as most recently in October 2010 with a planned listing on the Hong Kong stock exchange .

In mid-June 2011, Prada dared to go public in Hong Kong and achieved 1.5 billion euros despite the poor mood on the stock market. As a result, the Bertelli family's share in the company decreased from 94.9% to 82.5%.

Prada has 11 production facilities in Italy and England and employs a total of around 7,200 people including sales staff. The turnover of the Prada Group in 2010 was EUR 2.05 billion with a net profit of EUR 250 million. Net sales were EUR 1.53 billion (Prada: 1.2 billion; Miu Miu: 252 million; Church's: 44 million; Car Shoe: 18 million; others: 7 million).

Holdings / acquisitions

Following the trend of other companies and brands at the time to buy up as many fashion and luxury brands as possible , Prada took on large debts to take over the financially troubled Rome- based fashion company Fendi in 1999 . The shares in Fendi were shared with Louis Vuitton Moet Hennesy (LVMH). Prada failed to steer the loss-making Fendi company into the profit zone and sold the shares in 2001 for € 295 million to LVMH. At this point in time, Prada was reported to be in debt of € 1.2 billion.

In 1998, Prada bought 9.5% of the total share volume from competitor Gucci . The speculated takeover battle was finally continued by LVMH under Bernard Arnault , to whom the defeated Prada group - albeit profitably - sold its Gucci shares, and won in 1999 by the Pinault Printemps Redoute Group, which Gucci ultimately took over completely. Other acquired brands that operated under the Prada Holding umbrella included a. from March 1999 Helmut Lang , which was sold at a loss to the Japanese Link-Theory Holding in March 2006 and from August 1999 Jil Sander , which was sold to a British financial investor in February 2006 after losses. The English shoe manufacturer Church’s was also taken over in 1999, 55% of which had to be sold to a Swiss holding company in 2003 for reasons of liquidity , but which Prada bought back in 2006.

In 2000, Prada bought the Paris fashion label Azzedine Alaïa ; In 2007 the Tunisian- French designer bought back the Prada label named after him. In April 2001, Prada acquired the Italian shoe manufacturer (The Original) Car Shoe .

In July 2001 Prada took over the Italian fashion brand Genny with the Byblos label and the associated production facilities in Ancona . After Byblos had been sold on in 2002, Genny was discontinued in 2004, although the trademark rights remained with Prada. At the end of the 2000s, Bertelli described the Group's acquisition business from the late 1990s as a mistake. Since 2007, the Group's portfolio has consisted of the Prada, Miu Miu, Church's and Car Shoe brands. In 2014, the Prada Group took over the traditional Milanese fine baker Pasticceria Marchesi .
