Council of Fashion Designers of America

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Council of Fashion Designers of America ( CFDA ) is a non-profit - professional association of US fashion designers.

The New York City- based organization was founded in 1962 by Eleanor Lambert for the purpose of promoting fashion in the United States. The CFDA presidents in the past have included Norman Norell , Oscar de la Renta , Bill Blass and Perry Ellis . Since 2006, Diane von Fürstenberg has been chairwoman of the association's board of directors , which includes 26 American fashion designers. The CFDA currently has around 400 members, all of whom are designers of women's or men's fashion, jewelry or accessories and must be either US citizens or foreigners with US-based fashion companies.

CFDA Fashion Awards

Since 1981, the association has awarded several prizes at the CFDA Fashion Awards in Lincoln Center in New York , mainly to American fashion designers, but also to international fashion designers for special achievements in the world of fashion. Due to the high reputation that enjoy the awards in the fashion industry, the gala is also known as "the Oscars of Fashion" ( Oscar -Verleihung of fashion called). Similar to the Oscars, the nominees in the individual categories are announced at the CFDA Fashion Awards a few months before the actual ceremony , from which the chosen one on the evening of the award ceremony (sometimes the prizes are also awarded to several people) is chosen . The awards usually take place in June of each year.

The forerunners of the CFDA Awards were the so-called Coty Awards (Coty American Fashion Critics' Awards), which were launched by the perfume manufacturer Coty, Inc. under the direction of Eleanor Lambert in 1942 and from 1943 to 1984 exclusively to American personalities from the fashion industry were awarded. The first winners in 1943 included Hattie Carnegie , Lilly Daché and Norman Norell; to recent in 1984 Donna Karan , Perry Ellis and Jhane Barnes. Another highly respected fashion award ceremony in the USA was the Neiman Marcus Fashion Award , which was awarded as early as 1938, was also given to international personalities of the fashion world and fashion icons and was discontinued in 1995.

The CFDA Awards have been presented in the following categories since the late 1980s (there were no fixed categories until the mid-1980s):

  • The womenswear designer of the year , the menswear designer of the year (menswear) and the accessory designer of the year ( accessories ) are the main prizes. They are only given to designers who work and are headquartered in the United States.
  • The Swarovski Award for Womenswear (women's fashion), the Swarovski Award for Menswear (men's fashion) and the Swarovski Award for Accessory Design (accessories) are awards for up-and-coming talents; again, these are only given to designers who work and have their headquarters in the United States. The young talent award was given from 1986 to 2000 and 2002 under the name Perry Ellis Award in memory of the designer Perry Ellis who died in 1986 . In 2001 and from 2003 to 2006 it was presented under the name Swarovski's Perry Ellis Award . Since 2007 the price has been called the Swarovski Award . Initially a single price, since 1993 there has usually been a price each for the categories womenswear (see W in table; German women’s fashion ) and menswear (see M; German men’s fashion ) and since 1995 also for the accessory design category (see A; German accessories design ). In 2017 the three categories were again combined into one price.
  • The Eugenia Sheppard Award has been presented since 1987 in recognition of the American fashion journalist Eugenia Sheppard (1900–1984) for exceptional achievements by journalists and artists whose influence has changed the world of fashion.
  • The Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award (from 1985 to 2006: Lifetime Achievement Award ) is the award for life's work. In recognition of the contribution made by the American fashion designer Geoffrey Beene (1927–2004) to the development of the American fashion world, the award was named after him from 2007. Past winners include Marlene Dietrich , Giorgio Armani , Nancy Reagan , Oscar de la Renta , Martha Graham , Ralph Lauren , Gianni Versace , Geoffrey Beene (1997), Hubert de Givenchy , Yves Saint Laurent , Valentino Garavani , Karl Lagerfeld , Anna Wintour , Donna Karan and, since 2007, Carolina Herrera , Anna Sui , Michael Kors and Marc Jacobs .
  • The International Award is given to internationally active designers. The category was officially used for the first time in 1992 (winner: Gianni Versace), although non-American awardees had previously been recognized by the CFDA. In 2019 the prize was renamed the Valentino Garavani and Giancarlo Giammetti International Award after the Italian fashion designer Valentino and his business partner Giammetti signed a sponsorship deal.
  • The Eleanor Lambert Award (since 2002), in recognition of Eleanor Lambert , is an award for unique contributions to the fashion world and / or contributions that deserve recognition from the fashion industry but do not fall into any of the other categories.
  • The Board of Directors' Special Tribute has been intended as a special honor for exceptional contributions to the fashion world since 2003. Past winners include Oleg Cassini , Tom Ford , Norma Kamali, Bono , Michael Bloomberg , Michelle Obama and Alexander McQueen (posthumously).
  • The Fashion Icon Award has been presented since 2002 (not given in 2004 and between 2006 and 2009) to people whose personal style has a strong influence on the fashion world. So far, Nicole Kidman , Kate Moss , Iman Abdulmajid , Lady Gaga , Johnny Depp and Rihanna have been honored.
