The department store chain was founded in 1907 by Herbert Marcus Sr. (1878–1950) and his sister Carrie Marcus Neiman (1883–1953) and their husband Abraham Lincoln Neiman (1875–1970) with a shop in Dallas . At that time, Neiman Marcus offered exclusive women's fashion, with the aim of offering the widest possible selection. In 1914 the imposing Neiman Marcus Building was opened in Dallas, which still functions as a flagship store today . In 1926 Herbert's son, Stanley Marcus (1905–2002), took over the department store. He established the first regular fashion show that was held weekly. In 1928, Carrie Marcus divorced AL Neiman and Herbert Marcus paid off the brother-in-law, leaving the company entirely in the hands of the Marcus family. From 1929 Neiman Marcus also included men's fashion in its range. The first Christmas Book appeared ten years later . From 1951 gift items were also offered. A second store in Dallas did not open until the early 1950s, with the first off-site store following in Houston in 1957 .

In 1938 the Neiman Marcus Award was launched (officially: The Neiman Marcus Award for Distinguished Service in the Field of Fashion ), which until the last award in 1995 was initially awarded annually and from 1973 at irregular annual intervals, mostly to several winners. This award, sometimes referred to as the "Oscar of Fashion", was not limited to American designers and was given to important personalities in the fashion industry - including Christian Dior (1947), Gloria Swanson (1950), Gracia Patricia von Monaco (1955), Coco Chanel (1957), Estée Lauder (1962), Valentino Garavani (1967), Judith Leiber and Karl Lagerfeld (1980) and Miuccia Prada (1995) - awarded.

The family business was sold to the Broadway Stores (Carter Hawley Hale Stores) in 1969 . Stanley Marcus then took over a position on the board of directors of the new owner and withdrew from the company in 1975. His son Richard Marcus (* 1938) led Neiman Marcus as CEO until 1988 . The first Neiman Marcus store outside of Texas opened in Florida in 1971 . In the following years stores in Atlanta , Beverly Hills , Chicago , San Francisco , Las Vegas and others followed. The company has also owned the two Bergdorf Goodman branches in Manhattan since 1972 . In 1987 the Neiman Marcus Group was founded. In 1988, Allen Questrom was the first non-family member to take over management of the company. In 2005, the listed Neiman Marcus Group was taken over by TPG Capital and Warburg Pincus for 5.1 billion dollars and the listing was subsequently discontinued . In 2006, the group for a younger female audience opened four fashion stores under the name CUSP by Neiman Marcus (Engl. Peak , peak ), of which there was the state in 2011 in part within Neiman Marcus stores, nine in the United States. A new IPO of Neiman Marcus has been in the air since the end of the 2000s, but has not yet been realized.

For decades , Neiman Marcus was known for accepting American Express in addition to the in-house credit card in its own branches for credit card payments . This practice was only relaxed in late 2011.

From 2001 to 2010, Burton 'Burt' Tansky (* 1937) was CEO of the Neiman Marcus Group. Under Tansky, Neiman Marcus' sales doubled compared to the 1990s. In 2008, revenues were $ 4.6 billion. Tanksy had headed Bergdorf Goodman since 1989 and had been CEO of Neiman Marcus from 1998. Karen W. Katz has been CEO of the Neiman Marcus Group and successor to Tansky since 2010 and has been with the company since 1985.
