history
In 1993 David Bonderman, James Coulter and William S. Price founded the Texas Pacific Group in Fort Worth , Texas, named after the Texas and Pacific Railroad . At the beginning of 2007 the name was changed to TPG Capital .
Business activity
TPG Capital buys or participates in companies that are uninteresting for many other competitors and economically weakened. In doing so, it tries to take effective control of the companies in which it invests through a majority of the supervisory board, the chairmanship or a majority in general meetings. TPG Capital frequently engages in large volume transactions. In 2005, for example, the technology company SunGard Data Systems was acquired for USD 11.3 billion together with six other private equity firms, including Silver Lake Partners. The purchase of the Hollywood studio Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, which TPG made together with Comcast, Sony and two financial houses (Providence Equity Partners and DLJ Merchant Banking Partners), had a total volume of USD 4.9 billion. The industry focus is on companies with well-known brands in the consumer or luxury goods sector. Technology companies such as Seagate Technology and ON Semiconductor can also be found in the TPG investment portfolio. Other examples are Burger King, Ducati, or airlines like Continental and America West.
TPG is also heavily involved in Europe, for example through a stake in Gate Gourmet, one of the world's largest airline caterers, which was taken over by insolvent Swissair in 2002. In addition, TPG holds shares in the luxury brand Bally Managements and a majority stake in the Greek mobile network operator TIM Hellas Telecommunications with a transaction volume of USD 1.4 billion. In Germany, TPG is best known for its stakes in Grohe AG, Hemer and Mobilcom AG, Büdelsdorf. As a rule, TPG holds its investments for at least five years. However, profitable investments are also held indefinitely. The takeover is financed by investment funds that TPG Capital places on the capital market for this purpose. Above all, the takeover of the fittings manufacturer Grohe in 2004 by TPG and others had provoked the SPD chairman Franz Müntefering to his grasshopper settlement .
