Cushman & Wakefield is a US commercial real estate consultancy. The Chicago- based company has additional regional headquarters in New York City (North and South America), London (EMEA) and Sydney (APAC). It is active in over 60 countries and is one of the world's largest real estate consulting firms.

history

The company was founded in New York City on October 31, 1917 by J. Clydesdale Cushman and Bernard Wakefield . The company grew quickly after its founding and 1927 Clyde Cushman wrote a still valid and groundbreaking book: Management: How Modern Business Buildings Are Operated ( the proper guidance of modern business buildings ). Other authoritative books followed. Despite the global economic crisis in the 1930s, the company was soon profitable again. Cushman & Wakefield then quickly took the lead in the real estate market in New York City.

The 1940s brought a new building boom to New York and Cushman & Wakefield entered the young leasing market. Possibly the most prestigious project in 1946 was the trade in the property that now houses the UN building on First Avenue in Manhattan .

In the 1960s to 1980s, the company expanded across the country . New business fields were added, other companies were also advised and further financing options were introduced. During this period, Cushman & Wakefield was instrumental in the Willis Tower in Chicago (formerly Sears Tower). For many years the tallest building in the world at the time was financed and managed by Cushman & Wakefield.

In the 1970s, the company was owned by the media group RCA Corp. taken over and sold to the Rockefeller Group in 1976 . The company merged with the group to become a fully fledged real estate company with over 40 offices across the United States. In 1989, Cushman & Wakefield became one of the largest shareholders in the Japanese Mitsubishi Estate Co. Ltd. This is how Cushman & Wakefield grew into one of the largest real estate companies in the world .

Global positioning was further expanded in the 1990s. Cushman & Wakefield bought the European real estate company Healy & Baker in 1998 . International real estate companies were also taken over. In 2000, Cushman & Wakefield had 10,000 employees in 145 offices in 46 countries around the world.

In 2004, Cushman & Wakefield bought Russia's leading real estate company Stiles & Riabokobylko . After more than a quarter of a century of international expansion, further markets within the USA were sought. In May 2005, Cushman & Wakefield negotiated the 1.72 billion US dollar trade of the MetLife Building at Tishman Speyer from. At that time, that was the highest price ever paid for an office building. In 2007, Cushman & Wakefield broke all real estate records with the sale of the building at 666 Fifth Avenue for $ 1.8 billion. 71.5% of Cushman & Wakefield is now owned by Exor , which it acquired from the Rockefeller Group in 2007, while the remainder is largely owned by management and employees. In 2007 Cushman & Wakefield celebrated their 90th anniversary .

On September 1, 2015, Cushman & Wakefield and Debenham Thouard Zadelhoff (DTZ) merged and now operates under the Cushman & Wakefield brand and is majority-owned by a group of investors led by TPG Capital , PAG Asia Capital and Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan.
