An anniversary ( Latin annus jubilaeus, " jubilee year "; plural: anniversaries ) is understood to be a commemorative celebration when a special date returns. It is originally derived from the Old Testament "year of jubilee" (in Hebrew "Yovel"). Through the Holy Year introduced in 1300, this jubilee year was carried over to a Christian festival and celebrated every 100, 50, then every 25 years.

General

Today it has become common practice to call every anniversary of a pleasant event an anniversary. In addition to the anniversary, all multiples of 100, 50, 25, 10 or even 5 are special anniversaries. The anniversary is all the more important, the more of the above numbers it can be divided. Within the first 100 years, 5 - 10 - 20 - 25 - 50 - 75 - 100 are usually particularly significant. In the world of work, 10, 20, 30, 40 or 50 year service anniversaries are often given special recognition.

Is the anniversary interpreted as Anniversary, the formulation is the 150th anniversary of the 150th anniversary preferable because it is a time and no time. However, the Duden also allows the second option. Further formulation options are the 150th anniversary and the 150th anniversary .

The anniversary is often celebrated at birthdays, weddings, company foundings, confirmation , communion or the anniversary of the start of work (service anniversary) and other anniversaries. The jubilee often organizes a party or a celebration on this occasion and receives gifts from the guests.

The anniversary designations for married couples can be found in the article Wedding Day .
