The Jubiläumswarte is a lookout tower on the Gallitzinberg on the western outskirts of Vienna . It is located at Johann-Staud-Straße 80 on Vogeltennwiese in the 16th district of Vienna Ottakring at an altitude of 449 meters. The viewing platform of the Jubiläumswarte is freely accessible, but it is closed in the winter months.

It can be reached by bus line 52B from the stops "Jubiläumswarte" (directly in front of the control room, but only approached three times a day in each direction) or "Siedlung Kordon" (is further away, but is served more often). and hiking trails from Schottenhof and Heuberg; further with the lines 46A and 46B, stop “Feuerwache am Steinhof” or “Savoyenstraße” and about twenty minutes walk. You can reach the control room by car via Johann-Staud-Straße and Pelzer Rennweg.

On the viewing terrace at a height of 31 meters above ground ( 480  m above sea level ) you have a good all-round view to the west over the adjacent Vienna Woods and to the east over the Vienna city area. The staircase to the viewing terrace is 90 cm wide and has 183 steps. On a clear day the view over large parts of the Vienna basin is possible. On the horizon the Hainburg Mountains and the Leithagebirge can be seen in the east, the Limestone Alps with the Schneeberg in the south . On particularly clear days you can still see the White Carpathians in the northeast .

In the forest directly below the Jubiläumswarte is the Gaugefechtsstand Wien , a bunker from the Nazi era , which is currently no longer accessible because the entrances were blown up or walled up.

history

In August 1898 a wooden tower was built on the Vogeltennwiese on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the reign of Emperor Franz Joseph I. In the same year, this "Kaiser Jubilee waiting room" was swept over by a storm. This year the anniversary exhibition took place in the Prater. For this event, a 27.5 meter high iron tower was erected, which should be sold again after the exhibition. The "Ottakringer Beautification Association" founded on September 14, 1875 under its chairman Alexander Ritter von Dornfeld jun. bought the iron frame for 35,000 crowns and put it up instead of the wooden tower. The opening of the new tower was made on July 6th, 1899 by Mayor Karl Lueger . However, the elevator was expanded and visitors could only reach the upper viewing platform via the stairs.

On December 2, 1900, a refuge was opened next to the tower, which soon became a popular destination. During the Second World War and the following years, the tower began to deteriorate and was closed in 1952. The inn, too, had since ceased operations. In 1953 both were demolished. The construction of the control room began in 1955 and was opened on September 7, 1956 by Vice Mayor Karl Honay and City Councilor Leopold Thaller. The new building cost 320,000 Schilling (converted according to the cost of living index that would be around 166,000 euros). Concrete was chosen as the building material, equipped with steel-reinforced pillars.

At the same time, Kahlenberg AG built a modern restaurant at the foot of the Jubiläumswarte. In 1982 the control room was extensively renovated by two million schillings. After the death of the last tenant in 1995, the now dilapidated excursion inn remained closed. The building was renovated and opened on May 8, 1998 as the “Vienna Forest School” of the Forestry Office, Magistratabteilung 49. In this “forest school days”, Viennese school children are to be taught environmental awareness. Information boards draw attention to the abundance of animals and trees in the Vienna Woods.

There are a number of directional antennas on and around the viewing platform .

From the middle of May to the end of July 2012, the anniversary waiting room was completely renovated and was closed to visitors during this period. It has been freely accessible again since July 30, 2012.
