history

In 1966 the Norwegian shipowner Knut Kloster ( Klosters Reederei AS , Oslo ) founded Norwegian Caribbean Lines AS (NCL) to offer Caribbean cruises from Miami . Two years later, in 1968, the Starward , the first ship in a new generation of fleets, was put into service, followed by two more ships in 1971, the Southward and the Sunward II .

In the course of the 1970s, NCL rose to become one of the most successful cruise lines. In 1977, Norwegian Cruise Line took over Great Stirrup Cay , which is part of the Berry Islands of the Bahamas . 1979 NCL acquired the former luxury liner France , which at the Lloyd Werft to Norway was rebuilt. In 1980 the Norway was incorporated into the fleet as the new flagship.

In 1984 Knut Kloster took over the Royal Viking Line AS with its three cruise ships Royal Viking Star , Royal Viking Sea and Royal Viking Sky . The Norwegian Caribbean Lines AS was renamed in 1987 in Norwegian Cruise Line AS , whereby the abbreviation NCL remained. The Seaward entered service in 1988 as the first ship of a new, larger class. In 1992 another ship was put into service, the Dreamward . This was the first ship to leave Fort Lauderdale .

In 1993, Knut Kloster's attempt to sell the Royal Viking Line and the Royal Cruise Line failed ; however, in 1994 the Royal Viking Line was transferred to Cunard Line Ltd. with the ship Royal Viking Sun. sold. After the dissolution of the Royal Cruise Line , the development of the NCL into an independent company - which from now on as Norwegian Cruise Ltd. - in 1997 the insolvent Majesty Cruise Line was taken over with its two ships. In 1998 the British cruise operator Orient Lines was taken over, followed by the conversion of the two ships Dreamward and Windward by inserting a prefabricated middle section. This conversion increased the capacity of the ships by 40 percent, so NCL was able to book more than 500,000 guests for the first time.

In 1999, NCL shares were first traded on the New York Stock Exchange. More than 200 ports were called, thus offering the most extensive cruise program in NCL history. In the following year NCL was acquired by Star Cruises and this became the third largest cruise company in the world with a fleet of 18 ships. However, NCL was retained as a brand. In May, a new concept with free table times and free choice of table in the restaurants on board Norwegian Sky was introduced under the advertising name Freestyle Cruising . Colin Veitch, the initiator of the freestyle cruising concept, became the new managing director. The range of offers included 375 cruises in 50 countries.

In 2001 the new builds Norwegian Sun and Norwegian Star, specially designed for the freestyle cruising concept, expanded the fleet. A year later, another ship designed for the freestyle cruising concept was put into service, the Norwegian Dawn . In addition, all NCL ships were gradually converted into freestyle cruising ships. A German-speaking guest service was introduced on selected cruises in 2003.

The NCL America brand was introduced in 2004. This is the first time in more than 50 years that a ship is sailing under the US flag. The Norwegian Sky was converted into the Pride of Aloha . The SuperStar Leo , a Star Cruises ship , was converted into a modern freestyle cruising resort and integrated into the fleet as Norwegian Spirit . The online booking engine was also created in 2004 and enables travel agencies and tour operators to book and manage cruises over the Internet.

In 2005, the Pride of America built by Lloyd Werft Bremerhaven and the Norwegian Jewel built by Meyer Werft GmbH were put into service, followed in 2006 by the Pride of Hawaii and Norwegian Pearl built by Meyer Werft . On October 1, 2007, the new build Norwegian Gem was handed over to the shipping company by Meyer Werft.

In 2011, two more cruise ships were ordered from the Meyer shipyard in Papenburg. The ships are called Norwegian Breakaway and Norwegian Getaway and have a tonnage of around 144,000 GT . The ships were delivered in April 2013 and January 2014, respectively. Both ships can carry 4,000 passengers, making them the largest ships in the fleet after Norwegian Epic . The new Norwegian Getaway was completed three months earlier than planned and was able to start cruises to the Caribbean from Miami earlier. In October 2012, Norwegian Cruise Line commissioned two more newbuildings. They are based on the Norwegian Breakaway , but are measured by another deck with approx. 165,000 GT. This makes them the largest ships in the fleet and was delivered as Norwegian Escape and Norwegian Joy in October 2015 and April 2017, respectively. In July 2014, NCL ordered two more ships in the Breakaway Plus class from Meyer Werft in Papenburg. The first to be delivered in 2018 was the Norwegian Bliss , followed by the Norwegian Encore in 2019 .

In addition to other awards, in 2013 NCL received the title of “Europe's Leading Cruise Line” at the World Travel Awards for the sixth time in a row and was named “World's Leading Large Ship Cruise Line” for the second time in the same year.

By 2016, a total of 28 scrubbers ( exhaust gas desulphurisation in maritime shipping ) are to be installed on six other ships . In March 2013, the Pride of America had already received Scrubbers.

At the beginning of September 2014 it was announced that Norwegian Cruise Line would take over Prestige Cruise Holdings, Inc. together with its subsidiaries Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises for 3.025 billion US dollars. The acquisition was completed on November 20th. In March 2016, another new ship for Regent Seven Seas Cruises, the Seven Seas Splendor , was ordered from Fincantieri with delivery in 2020. The ship was laid down on June 28, 2018 in Ancona .

In February 2017, four ships with a measurement of 140,000 GT were ordered from Fincantieri , which are to be delivered between 2022 and 2025. Options for two more ships with commissioning by 2027 were also agreed. The ships were firmly ordered in July 2018.

concept

The NCL offers PREMIUM ALL INCLUSIVE on the German market : in addition to meals, events and use of on-board facilities, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages are also included in the travel price. Some of the so-called specialty restaurants are excluded . The concept includes the casual clothing style on board, which has also been introduced by other cruise lines, as well as free table times and free choice of table.

The Wiesbaden branch of NCL (Bahamas) Ltd. is responsible for the continental European market . , Hamilton (Bermuda) , responsible. Around 90 people are employed there.

Both Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruise rely on smaller ships and a higher quality offer. With RSSC, all shore excursions are included in the cruise price.

criticism

A cruise on Norwegian Spirit made negative headlines around the world in October 2019 when, after several unplanned days on the high seas, with winds of up to Beaufort 11 in places, the passengers in the ship's atrium rebelled. Several ports, including all in Iceland, could not be approached, replacement ports were partially closed or occupied by other ships, making it impossible to go ashore. The toilet systems sometimes did not work, replacement programs on board such as a laundry visit were charged for 69 euros per person. After the tumult on board, the shipping company offered a discount of 25% on the next cruise instead of a refund.
