The Norwegian Epic is a cruise ship operated by the US shipping company Norwegian Cruise Line . The construction of the type ship of the "F3" class at the French shipyard STX France Cruise SA (formerly: Chantiers de l'Atlantique ) was overshadowed by disputes between the contracting parties and a number of other problems.

The Norwegian Epic is measured with 155,873 GT and was the largest ship of the shipping company until the Norwegian Escape 2015. She is 329 meters long, 40 meters wide and has a draft of 8.7 meters. 4,228 passengers (with two people per cabin) and 1,730 crew members can be accommodated on 19 decks. The ship has a diesel-electric drive and reaches a speed of 22 knots .

history

Construction and commissioning

On September 9, 2006, the US shipping company Norwegian Cruise Line and the French shipyard STX France Cruise SA signed the contract for the construction of two 150,000 GT cruise ships of the new "F3" class with the option of a further newbuilding. The keel laying of the construction number C33 took place on April 24, 2008. In addition to representatives from the shipping company and shipyard, representatives from the shareholders of Star Cruises and Apollo Management were also present at the ceremony.

In mid-September 2008, STX France Cruise SA confirmed that there had been a dispute with the management of NCL and its shareholders over the construction costs of the ships , who then even considered terminating the contract. The ship was about 25% complete at this point. Finally, at the end of 2008, the shipping company officially announced, without giving any reasons, that it would not take up the option of the further newbuildings of the "F3" class.

On January 28, 2009, the shipping company published the name of the new building in a press release and confirmed the commissioning in May 2010. The completion of the hull was completed on April 9 with the assembly of the last building block. The bow segment with the designation "Block 642" had a weight of 445 tons, was 26 meters long, 33 meters wide and 9 meters high. The hull paint designed by NCL's marketing department was completed a month later. With the assembly of the two adjacent chimneys, the shell was largely completed at the beginning of June. Each chimney weighs 45 tons, is 20 meters long, 14 meters high and, in addition to the exhaust pipes, also houses components from heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems.

On July 11, 2009, Norwegian Epic was undocked in the presence of representatives from the shipyard and shipping company and moved to the equipment quay with the help of six tugs. The first test drives on the Atlantic took place at the beginning of February 2010. Several incidents occurred in the weeks that followed. During the test drives in mid-April 2010, main engine 2 suffered major damage. At the beginning of May 2010 a fire broke out in the rear part of deck 4, which damaged parts of the electrical installation. Only a few days later, the upper decks burned again. At the beginning of June there was another fire in the area of an air conditioning system. The damage remained minor, the investigating police suspected arson.

The shipyard trials were completed on June 13, 2010 and the Norwegian Epic was handed over to Norwegian Cruise Line on the evening of June 17, 2010. The ship left the shipyard without further ceremonies and was initially transferred to Rotterdam . On the way to Southampton , where the first passengers were supposed to board the Atlantic crossing , problems arose with one of the two propeller shafts, which resulted in a delay of several hours. On June 23, 2010, the Norwegian Epic left for New York , where it arrived on July 2 and was christened by country singer Reba McEntire .

Furnishing

The Norwegian Epic has 1986 interior and balcony cabins. There are no pure outside cabins without a balcony. On the Norwegian Epic there are 128 single cabins for the first time on a cruise ship, which are connected to a studio lounge for getting to know each other.

There are a total of eleven restaurants and places to eat. There are also nine specialty restaurants, from a steakhouse to a sushi bar. The main restaurant 'Garden Café' has a wide range of options from beef steak to pizza and crepe. A special highlight on Norwegian Epic is the Epic Plunge on the pool deck. This is a water slide that works on the principle of flushing a toilet. There is also an area on the ship designed for adults only.

operation area

Norwegian Epic sails the western Mediterranean from Barcelona in summer and the Caribbean from Port Canaveral and Puerto Rico in winter.
