The Pride of America (dt. Pride of America ) is a cruise ship of the shipping company Norwegian Cruise Line . She is the first cruise ship to sail under the US flag in over 50 years. Her home port is Honolulu on the island of Oahu .

history

The history of the Pride of America , whose construction was overshadowed that of any other modern cruise ship mishaps and setbacks, started in March 1999 when the tour operator American Classic Voyages (AMCV) a contract with the shipyard Litton Ingalls Shipbuilding Inc. concluded. Under the name Project America , two cruise ships should be built, which should mainly be used in the sea area around Hawaii . The company planned investments of over US $ 1 billion. The ship was to be named Queen of the Americas .

Construction and commissioning

The keel-laying of the Project America with the hull number 7671 took place on 10 October 2000 at the shipyard Litton Ingalls Shipbuilding Inc. instead. While the ship was in the shell, the client filed for bankruptcy on October 19, 2001 under " Chapter 11 " of US bankruptcy law. One of the reasons given was the collapse in demand for cruises after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 .

In 2002 the shipping company Norwegian Cruise Line acquired the roughly 40% completed shell and commissioned the Lloyd Werft in Bremerhaven to extend the ship by about 25 meters and finally complete it as Pride of America . Construction materials that were still at Litton Ingalls Shipbuilding Inc. were partly brought to Bremerhaven in containers. The transfer to Bremerhaven took place between November 5th and December 13th. In July 2003, the hull lying in the dry dock was cut apart and the new section installed. After completion of the work, the ship was relocated to the equipment quay in November 2003.

On January 14, 2004, shortly before completion, the Pride of America , which was still on the dockyard's equipment quay, was tilted slightly by a storm. By mounting the openings on the quay facing starboard side water penetrated, so that the list is always greater was. The subsequent massive water ingress flooded the four lower decks including the engine room and the ship sank to the bottom of the harbor basin. At the time of the accident, 14 shipyard workers were on board, but they were uninjured. Since the ship could not be completed in April as agreed, Lloyd Werft had to file for bankruptcy at the beginning of February 2004. Nevertheless, the shipping company and shipyard agreed to lift, repair and complete the ship. The salvage work began on February 13, 2004. With the help of pumps , several tugs and a salvage pontoon, the ship could be lifted. The machine and drive systems were badly damaged by the accident and the electrical systems in the lower decks were almost completely destroyed. Both propeller pods had to be replaced, the diesel engines were completely dismantled and reinstalled after a general overhaul. The recovery and repair of the damage took several months and cost the insurers a total of around 225 million US $.

After the test runs were successfully completed in mid-May 2005, the Pride of America was finally handed over to the Norwegian Cruise Line shipping company on June 6, 2005 - two years later than originally planned . After the presentation of the ship was canceled for various reasons, the transfer to New York began immediately after the handover . The editors of a trade magazine honored the shipyard's achievements by naming the Pride of America "Ship of the Year 2005".

On June 17, 2005, Pride of America was christened by then US Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao. Then the ship left the port with a course for Hawaii , from where she left for her first cruise in July 2005.

commitment

The Pride of America was designed exclusively for use in American waters and is sailing all year round in the sea area around Hawaii . The occupation consists entirely of American citizens. From Honolulu (departure 7 p.m.) the destinations Kahului on Maui (from 8 a.m. on the 2nd day to 6 p.m. on the 3rd day), Hilo ( 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the 4th day) and Kailua-Kona (7: 30-17: 30 on the 5th day) on the Big Island and Nawiliwili at Līhuʻe on Kauaʻi (8am on the 6th day to 2pm on the 7th day). In Kailua-Kona, the ship is lying in the roadstead due to the shallow port basin, while after leaving Nawiliwili it makes a panoramic voyage along the Nā-Pali coast of Kauai. At 7 o'clock the Pride of America arrives back in Honolulu on Oahu .

Between April 26 and May 10, 2008, the Pride of America was extensively renovated in the dry dock of BAE Systems Hawaii Shipyards in Pearl Harbor for US $ 4.1 million.

In March 2013, the Pride of America returned to dry dock in Honolulu for 14 days, where it was equipped with new suites and studio cabins. The ship also received scrubbers .

At the end of February 2016, the Pride of America went to San Francisco for a 14-day stay in the shipyard, as the capacities in Pearl Harbor were already fully booked by this date. It is the most extensive renovation since it was commissioned in 2005, including a chapel for weddings on the high seas.

Machine system and drive

The diesel-electric machinery of the Pride of America consists of six 8-cylinder 4-stroke turbo diesel - line engines of the Series 46 of the Finnish manufacturer Wärtsilä . These motors drive generators that supply the entire ship with electrical energy. It is driven by two spaced below the rear azimuth thruster type Rolls-Royce / Alstom "Mermaid" (dt. "Mermaid"), with which the ship reaches a speed of about 22 knots.

Trivia

  • Around 10,000 loudspeakers are installed on board the Pride of America . The technology for controlling and optimizing the sound quality was developed by the German company Pan Acoustics in cooperation with the Dutch company ACS (Acoustic Control Systems).
