history

SuperStar Leo cruise ship in Hong Kong Harbor 2002

The SuperStar Leo was the first Leo class ship within the Star Cruises shipping line. The base port of the SuperStar Leo was Singapore in 1998 . From there cruises to Malaysia and Thailand were carried out for two to five nights . A year later, the sister ship , the SuperStar Virgo , arrived in Singapore. This was stationed from September 10, 1999 in Hong Kong , from where cruises to China , Hainan , Vietnam and through the South China Sea were offered.

In 2003 the SuperStar Leo was relocated to Australia . The main reason was the H5N1 bird flu outbreak in Asia at the time . The ship was later transferred to Hong Kong. 2004 was Norwegian Cruise Line , the Pride of America put into service. Shortly before completion, the ship sank in a storm at the Lloyd Werft Bremerhaven . Since voyages had already been booked for this ship, the SuperStar Leo was taken into the NCL fleet within the parent company Star Cruises and, after a renovation of only two weeks, put into service as Norwegian Spirit . Initially, she operated the cruises to Alaska originally planned for Norwegian Sky together with Norwegian Sun and Norwegian Star . She then changed her port of departure to New York for Caribbean cruises. The ship first came to Europe in 2012 . She is the shipping company's second ship to sail in European waters all year round. In the summer months she starts from Barcelona and Venice , in winter she visits the Canary Islands from Barcelona. Sister ship is the SuperStar Virgo .

operation area

The ship is used in the Mediterranean and the North Sea and sails 10 to 14 day tours from Barcelona , Civitavecchia and Southampton .

The SuperStar Leo was the first cruise ship with a helipad. This was involuntarily tested during the test drive on September 4th and 5th, 1998. A doctor diagnosed a crew member with acute appendicitis . A rescue helicopter landed on the ship and brought the patient to the hospital in Emden . Thanks to the quick help, he was fine again after a few days. Also completely new was a rescue system for cruise ships in which the passengers are brought to the life rafts via rescue tubes. This new type of rescue was carried out on September 15, 1998 under the observation of other shipping companies, authorities, shipyards and suppliers.

The STN Atlas Nacos 45-3 system is used as the navigation system on the bridge.
