Star Cruises is the third largest cruise company in the world after Carnival Corporation & plc and Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. and dominates the Asia-Pacific market. The company owns the brands Norwegian Cruise Line , NCL America and Cruise Ferries , all of which together have 22 cruise ships with over 35,000 beds. The company's shares are listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange and the Singapore Stock Exchange .
history
Star Cruises was founded as a subsidiary of the Genting Group in Malaysia on November 10, 1993 in Bermuda and has its headquarters in Hong Kong . The company's first ships were two ferries owned by the bankrupt Swedish Rederi AB Slite . In the years that followed, Star Cruises bought several other used ships. In 1998 Star Cruises received its first own newbuilding, the SuperStar Leo , which was followed in the following year by the sister ship SuperStar Virgo .
In 2000, Star Cruises bought Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) together with its subsidiaries Orient Lines and Norwegian Capricorn Line , becoming the first global cruise company. The Norwegian Capricorn Lines shortly thereafter was integrated into the Star Cruises and not surfaced since then more than brand name on. Before buying NCL, Star Cruises had several newbuildings in the planning or under construction, but these were then assigned to the subsidiary NCL. In August 2007, Star Cruises announced that a 50% stake in NCL had been sold to the US subsidiary Apollo Management .
In 2001, Star Cruises founded a new subsidiary, Cruise Ferries , which initially made short cruises from Hong Kong to Xiamen on a ship, the Wasa Queen .
On July 29, 1999 Star Cruises ordered 2 ships of the SuperStar Sagittarius II class with a tonnage of 112,000 GT, the delivery of which was planned for the years 2003 and 2005. The ships were to be built at the Meyer shipyard in Papenburg. In 2000 the ships were canceled and instead the ships Norwegian Jewel and Pride of Hawaii were put into service for Norwegian Cruise Line in 2005 .
Since the Norwegian Cruise Line has proven to be more profitable than the ships sailing under its own brand name Star Cruises , there has been a trend since 2006 to build new ships for the NCL and to assign the replaced older ships to the Star Cruises fleet in Asia.
In 2016 and 2017, two newbuildings for 3364 passengers from Meyer Werft should come into service, the first should be named Genting World . In fact, the ships were finally put into service for the sister brand Dream Cruises as Genting Dream and World Dream .
Since the first new building was supposed to go into operation as Genting World , the previous Genting World was renamed The Taipan in May 2014 .
In May 2016, Star Cruises ordered two Global Class ships measured at 201,000 GT from Lloyd Werft Bremerhaven with planned delivery in 2019 and 2020. In the course of the establishment of MV Werften , however, the newbuildings are now to be made at these shipyards, not at Lloyd Werft. arise and also get going for Dream Cruises.
