MV shipyards is the name of a corporate group in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern ship shipyards operates. It belongs to the Genting Hong Kong company (Genting HK). The company has had cruise ships built at the three traditional shipyard locations Wismar , Rostock and Stralsund since 2016 .

history

Genting Hong Kong (Genting HK) is an Asian tourism company that operates the cruise brands Star Cruises, Crystal Cruises and Dream Cruises. The great demand for cruise ships and the resulting long delivery times led to the purchase of suitable new build yards for large cruise ships, especially for the Asian market.

In September 2015, Genting HK acquired a majority stake in Lloyd Werft Bremerhaven for EUR 17.5 million , and at the beginning of January 2016 the remaining shares in Lloyd Werft Bremerhaven AG and Lloyd Investitions- und Verwaltungs GmbH. In February 2016 it was announced that Nordic Yards would be taken over by the Genting Group. In March 2016, the Genting Group confirmed the takeover of Nordic Yards and the associated shipyards for a purchase price of 230 million euros. The locations in Bremerhaven, Wismar, Warnemünde and Stralsund with a total of over 1700 employees were to be combined under the name of Lloyd Werft Gruppe. A total of 85 million euros were to be invested in the next two years to equip the shipyard group for the tasks ahead.

After Genting HK acquired the Wismar , Rostocker and Stralsund shipyards from Nordic Yards in March 2016 , ship production under the name of the group subsidiary Lloyd Werft Bremerhaven was initially announced. At the beginning of July 2016, Genting HK announced that it would operate the three shipyards in Mecklenburg-West Pomerania under the name MV Werften (MV for Mecklenburg-West Pomerania) with its headquarters in Wismar.

Tan Sri KT Lim, Chairman of Genting HK, announced in November 2016 that his company wanted to invest around 100 million euros in the three locations in order to make MV Werften one of the world's most modern and efficient cruise shipyards. Jarmo Laakso was appointed managing director. The group is to deliver the first two of four river cruise ships for Crystal River Cruises in 2017 and three 20,000 GT polar expedition yachts of the Endeavor class for Crystal Yacht Cruises between 2019 and 2021 .

In March 2020, the MV Werften had around 3,100 employees at the three locations. On March 20, 2020, the production of the current shipbuilding projects was suspended and the shipyards were temporarily closed. This was justified with the restrictions in operations due to the COVID-19 pandemic . The North German Radio reported that the shipyard group had problems with calculations for the second cruise ship in the Global class and the expedition yacht Crystal Endeavor to settle. MV Werften had contacted KfW and applied for liquidity assistance from the special Corona program. The additional credit requirement until the end of 2020 is estimated at 600 million euros. In mid-June 2020, the NDR reported that operations would probably be suspended until the end of September.

MV Werften began with river cruise ships of the Rhine class, followed by expedition cruise ships and then cruise ships of the global class.

Rhine class for Crystal River Cruises

In the summer of 2016, Crystal River Cruises was also launched, a brand for river cruises in Europe. The previous order to Lloyd Werft for two ships ( Crystal Rhein and Crystal Mahler ) of the Rhine class was expanded to include two more ships ( Crystal Debussy and Crystal Ravel ) in November 2015 .

Construction of the four Crystal River Cruises river cruise ships began in Bremen on May 10, 2016 in the steel construction company BVT, which is part of the Heinrich Rönner Group. The Rönner Group was commissioned by the Lloyd Werft with the steel construction work for the four river ships. The President Edie Rodriguez of the American Crystal Cruises, which belongs to the Genting Group, pressed the start button of the plasma burning system for the cutting of the first steel section of the river cruise ship at BVT in Bremen in the former Vulkan steel construction hall in Bremen. A total of four hulls were manufactured by the Rönner Group in Bremen, Roßlau and Boizenburg for the Lloyd shipyard and shipped to Wismar. On November 8th, the first sections were transferred with a dock ship. The expansion and completion then took place in the Genting shipyard in Wismar.

The four 135-meter-long ships for up to 110 passengers in 55 cabins were delivered to Crystal River Cruises in 2017 and 2018 .

Endeavor- class for Crystal Yacht Expeditions Cruises

On January 15, 2018, the construction of the 20,000 GT cruise ship Crystal Endeavor began in Stralsund ; the mega yacht with ice class is to be built entirely at the shipyard in Stralsund. It is the first in a series of three cruise ships for the Group's own shipping company Crystal Yacht Expeditions Cruises . The 164-meter-long expedition yachts for 200 passengers in 100 cabins, which can sail to the tropics as well as the polar regions, are designed to break ice up to a thickness of one meter. According to the shipyard, they are the largest ice-class mega yachts in the world. The Crystal Endeavor was originally due to be delivered in 2019. After it was undocked in December 2019, the spring 2020 is planned as a new delivery date.

Global class for Dream Cruises

Global class data

With the ships of the Global class , which can each accommodate 9,500 passengers, MV Werften is currently (at the end of 2019) building the largest cruise ships in the world measured by the number of passengers. The Global Class breaks the record for cruise ships not with its external dimensions of 342 meters in length and 46 meters in width, but with its capacity of up to 9500 passengers and 2500 crew members. Today's cruise ships, which are also the largest in their dimensions, the Oasis class of the shipping company Royal Caribbean International, travel around 9,000 people including crew.

The total investment volume in cabin production is 13 million euros.
