Karl Serreqi

Karl Serreqi OFM (born February 2, 1911 in Shkodra , † April 5, 1954 in the prison of Burrel ) was a Franciscan religious priest who kept the confessional secret under torture in the atheistic Albania of the Enver Hoxha regime , initially for death, later for life Was sentenced to prison and then died in prison. He is one of the Thirty-Eight Martyrs of Albania .

Life

Karl Serreqi was born on February 2, 1911 in Shkodra, the third son of his parents, and was baptized with the name Ndoc . He attended the Franciscan school and entered their order; there he received the religious name Karl . He completed his theology studies in Brescia . He was ordained a priest at the end of June 1936. As a pastor he worked in a very difficult parish in the mountains (region of Lekbibaj ).

The security service of the communist regime wanted to know from him what a “political person” had confided in him in confession. When Father Karl Serreqi refused to give this information, he was arrested on October 9, 1946. Even under torture, he kept the confessional secret. He was sentenced to death on January 18, 1947, and a few days later the sentence was commuted to life imprisonment . Father Karl Serreqi died in Burrel prison on April 5, 1954.

The Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints , Cardinal Angelo Amato , presided over the celebrations on behalf of Pope Francis .
