Sodium toluene-4-sulfonate is a chemical compound of sodium from the group of sulfonates . It is the sodium salt of p -toluenesulfonic acid .

Extraction and presentation

Sodium toluene-4-sulfonate can be obtained by sulfonating toluene with sulfuric acid and sodium chloride , whereby the isomeric sodium toluene-2-sulfonate is formed in addition to sodium toluene-4-sulfonate .

properties

Sodium toluene-4-sulfonate is a flammable, difficult to ignite, beige solid that is soluble in water. A melting point of around 500 ° C is assumed, but the compound decomposes before this temperature is reached.

use

Sodium toluene-4-sulfonate is used as a carrier electrolyte for the deposition of polypyrrole membranes . It is also used as a solvent to study the properties of resin particles and in the textile industry.
