Angelo Cardinal Amato SDB (born June 8, 1938 in Molfetta , Province of Bari , Italy ) is an Italian religious priest and cardinal curial of the Roman Catholic Church and emeritus Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints .

Life

After entering the religious order of the Salesians of Don Bosco Amato studied Catholic theology and philosophy and received on 22 December 1967, the sacrament of Holy Orders . In 1974 he was at the Gregorian University in Rome as a doctor of philosophy doctorate and was then professor of dogmatic theology at the Pontifical Salesian University in Rome, where he was also Dean was the Faculty of Theology and from 1997 to 2000 as vice rector.

Already active as an advisor to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith , as well as to the Pontifical Councils for Christian Unity and Interreligious Dialogue , Pope John Paul II appointed him titular Archbishop of Sila on December 19, 2002 and appointed him secretary of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. On 6 January 2003, John Paul II gave him in. St. Peter's Basilica , the episcopal ordination ; Co-consecrators were the Archbishops of the Curia, Leonardo Sandri and Antonio Maria Vegliò .

On July 9, 2008, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him . as Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of the Saints . In the solemn consistory of November 20, 2010, Pope Benedict XVI accepted him. as cardinal deacon with the title deaconry Santa Maria in Aquiro in the cardinals college . The new Pope Francis confirmed in December 2013 as Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. On May 26, 2018, Pope Francis appointed Giovanni Angelo Becciu to succeed Amato as Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints from September 1, 2018.

After the resignation of Benedict XVI. Cardinal Amato took part in the 2013 conclave , in which Pope Francis was elected.
