The Pontifical Academy for Theology ( Italian : Pontificia Academia Theologica ) was founded in Rome in 1695 and received its first statutes in 1718 from Pope Clement XI. Pope Clement XIV sponsored the academy. Gregory XVI. wrote specific laws and regulations in 1838. John Paul II reformed the Pontificia Academia Theologica in 1999.

The Pontifical Academy of Theology, based in Vatican City, deals with the dialogue between faith and reason and the deepening of the Church's teaching. Pope John Paul II's encyclical Fides et ratio was a “work plan” for the activity.

On June 3, 2019, Pope Francis appointed the bishop emeritus of Oristano, Ignazio Sanna , as the new President of the Pontifical Academy of Theology. He succeeds Real Tremblay CSsR .
