Marc Cardinal Ouellet PSS (born June 8, 1944 in La Motte , Québec , Canada as Joseph Armand Marc Ouellet ) is a Cardinal Curia of the Roman Catholic Church . Since 2010 he has been cardinal prefect of the Congregation of Bishops .

Life

Marc Ouellet, son of a family with eight children, attended Berthier College (1958–1959) and studied philosophy and pedagogy at the University of Education in Amos (1959–1964). In 1964 he earned a bachelor's degree from Laval University . From 1964 to 1968 he studied Catholic theology at the Major Seminary of Montréal and the University of Montreal . On May 25, 1968, he received the sacrament of ordination through Gaston Hains . He then worked for two years in the Pastoral and was curate in the parish of Saint-Sauveur in Val-d'Or .

After training in Spanish, he taught philosophy from 1970 to 1971 at the Major Seminary in Bogotá, Colombia, which was run by the priestly community of Saint-Sulpice . In 1972 he joined the Sulpizians . In 1974 he completed a philosophical degree in Rome at the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas and at the Theological Faculty of the University of Innsbruck .

In 1974 he became a professor at the Major Seminary in Manizales in Colombia, and from 1976 at the Grand Séminaire de Montréal. In 1978 he returned to Rome and in 1983 received his doctorate in dogmatics from the Pontifical Gregorian University . After training in German in Passau , he became a professor at the Major Seminary in Cali in Colombia. From 1984 to 1989 he was Rector of the Manizales Seminary in Colombia. In 1989 he became rector of the Grand Séminaire de Montréal, and then in 1994 rector of the St. Joseph Seminary in Edmonton and taught at Newman Theological College in Edmonton in 1996/97 . From 1992 to 2002 Marc Ouellet was Grand Prior of the Canada-Quebec Lieutenancy of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem .

From 1996 to 2002 he held the chair of dogmatic theology at the Pontifical Institute “John Paul II” for studies on marriage and the family at the Lateran University in Rome, where he was appointed adjunct professor in 1997. From 1995 to 2000 he was Consultor of the Congregation for the Clergy and in 1996 Consultor of the General Chapter of the Sulpizians.

On March 3, 2001 Pope appointed him John Paul II. To Titular Archbishop of Acropolis and secretary of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity and donated him on March 3, 2001 at St. Peter's Basilica , the episcopal ordination ; Co-consecrators were the Curia Cardinals Angelo Sodano and Giovanni Battista Re . His episcopal motto is Ut unum sint (“so that they may be one” John 17:22  EU ).

He was named Archbishop of Québec on November 15, 2002 and installed in office on January 26 of the following year. On October 21, 2003, Pope John Paul II accepted him as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Maria in Traspontina in the college of cardinals . After his death, Cardinal Ouellet took part in the 2005 conclave .

Pope Benedict XVI appointed him for the XII. Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops , which met in Rome from October 5th to 26th, 2008, to the General Relator. On June 30, 2010 Benedict XVI called him. the Cardinal Prefect of the Congregation for Bishops and president of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America . Pope Francis confirmed Ouellet as Cardinal Prefect of the Congregation of Bishops in the course of an initial reorganization of the Curia after his election as Pope on December 16, 2013.

On April 13, 2012, as special envoy of the Pope, he led the opening service for the Heilig-Rock pilgrimage in Trier .

Before the 2013 conclave, Cardinal Ouellet was treated as a papabile in the press , as his North American origins and previous work in South America meant that he could have won the votes of American cardinals. Pope Francis elevated him to cardinal bishop with effect from June 28, 2018 while retaining his titular church .

Act

Marc Ouellet is considered an intellectual and cosmopolitan and conservative on theological issues. He spoke out against abortion and against gay marriage . In the abuse scandal , he plays an important role as an educator.

Ouellet is close to the Catholic journal COMMUNIO (International Catholic Journal Communio; appears in around 17 languages) and prefers the theology of Hans Urs von Balthasar (1905–1988).

In addition to French and English , Ouellet also speaks fluent Italian , German , Portuguese , Spanish and understands Latin and Hebrew .
