John Paul II Pontifical Institute for Studies on Marriage and the Family
The John Paul II Pontifical Institute for Studies on Marriage and the Family ( Latin: Pontificium Institutum Joannes Paulus II Studiorum Matrimonii ac Familiae ) was an institute under papal law for theological studies with locations in many countries. On September 8, 2017, Pope Francis established the Pontifical Theological Institute John Paul II for Marriage and Family Studies with the Motu proprio Summa cura and at the same time dissolved the previous institute.
history
Pope John Paul II founded the institution as a Pontifical Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family with the Apostolic Constitution Magnum Matrimonii Sacramentum, which he promulgated . The Pope was concerned with the question of pastoral care and responsibility for marriage and the family.
Although the institute was organizationally linked to the Lateran University , it acted independently and, by virtue of its own law, awarded licensees in theology, doctorates and master’s degrees in marriage and family studies , also specializing in bioethics . The institute had close ties to the now defunct Pontifical Council for the Family . It publishes the international journal Anthropotes .
The Grand Chancellor of the Institute was loud statutes of the respective Cardinal Vicar of the Diocese of Rome , most recently until 15 August, 2016 Agostino Vallini . On this date, regardless of the previous statutes , Pope Francis appointed the prefect of the newly created Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life , Archbishop Vincenzo Paglia , as Grand Chancellor. At the same time, the institute was closed until further notice for the purpose of personnel and organizational restructuring and content reorientation, and all of the leading employees who had distinguished themselves in the previous years through massive criticism of the papal teaching office and had spoken out about rigid deontological moral doctrine , were all released. At the end of October 2016, the Pope addressed the institute directly in a personal address and asked it to reorientate.
