Magnum Matrimonii Sacramentum is the Apostolic Constitution on the final legal form of the Pontifical Institute for Studies on Marriage and the Family , it was promulgated on October 7, 1982 by Pope John Paul II .

To marriage and family

John Paul II explains that the Church has always been concerned with a great pastoral concern for the sacrament of marriage. He is aware that marriage and the family are among the greatest goods of the human race. Therefore, the Second Vatican Council discussed this topic for a long time and in detail and wrote down the result in Gaudium et Spes . All the popes had spoken out in favor of the highest ideal of marriage and family and his predecessor Paul VI. would have expressed itself in an extraordinary measure with the encyclical Humanae Vitae on the questions of the time. Ultimately, the Synod of Bishops , which met from September 26th to October 25th, 1980, voted for the establishment of a Pontifical Council for the Family .

Theological Institute

For the Pope, pastoral care and responsibility for marriage and the family were part of the founding of a theological papal institute for marriage and family. Now, he explains, it has become necessary to found a primary institute for studies whose special concern is to promote the theological and pastoral study of marriage and the family. With this constitution he gives the papal institute for marriage and family, the cornerstone of which had already been laid at the Pontifical Lateran University , a legally independent form. Its main task is to award the following academic degrees :

  • A PhD in Theology with a Specification in Theology for Marriage and the Family.
  • The licentiate in theology for marriage and the family.
  • The diploma ( Bachelor ) in the study of marriage and the family.

organization

He commissions the institute to process the following objects:

  1. The development and implementation of a curriculum leading to a doctorate in sacred theology with additional theological studies on marriage and family for those who have already obtained a degree in sacred theology.
  2. The establishment of a curriculum for the licentiate in Holy Theology for those who have received the Bachelor in Holy Theology.
  3. Establishing a curriculum for diplomas in theology for marriage and family.
  4. The planning and implementation of seminars to which specially trained specialists are to be invited who are dedicated to questions of marriage and family. Episcopal conferences for study can also take place in this institute at the request of the Roman Curia .

Institute management

The academic administration of the institute should consist of the chancellor and the rector of the Pontifical Lateran University as well as the president and the council of the institute. The right to propose the president is reserved to the Pope.

Establishment

In order to set up the institute, John Paul II also stipulates that the institute has a special connection with the Pontifical Council for the Family, and that it should be given the title “Our Lady of Fátima ”. The effective date was set for October 14, 1982.
