Divinus Perfectionis Magister
The apostolic constitution Divinus Perfectionis Magister was promulgated on January 25, 1983 by Pope John Paul II and lays down the implementing provisions for the canonization process .
Reorganization
With the Constitution, the Pope fundamentally regulated the process of canonization and also reorganized the structure of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints . The new regulation by Divinus Perfectionis Magister , which was also included in the Codex Iuris Canonici , replace the previous regulations.
At the beginning, John Paul II remarked that the process of canonization had become more and more extensive since the introduction by Pope Sixtus V in 1588 through various provisions of his successors, and at the same time changes had been made again and again. The wish of John Paul was to use the Constitution to organize the manner in which the proceedings were carried out and the working methods of the responsible congregation “so that We also shape them in accordance with the scientific requirements and the concerns of our brothers in the episcopate, who often demanded greater flexibility in the proceedings themselves but preserving the thoroughness of the inquiries on such a serious matter ”.
The document also essentially offers procedures to be processed by those responsible. The respective local bishop , whom the faithful can approach with regard to a beatification or canonization process, has to obtain precise information from the postulator of the procedure who has been appointed with his consent . If necessary, the writings of the servant of God, who is the subject of the proceedings, must be examined separately by theological experts to see whether there is anything in them that is contrary to faith and morality. The study of miracles is also carried out in a separate study and with the participation of medical experts at the Congregation. Finally, the local bishop has to send to the Holy Congregation a copy of all the acts in duplicate together with a copy of the books of the Servant of God examined by the theological experts and their assessment, as well as a declaration of compliance with the decrees of Urban VIII with regard to the necessary requirements.
In the second and third parts the tasks of the members of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints are detailed in the same form. These are those of the secretary, the various rapporteurs, the so-called general reporter and, depending on the requirements of the procedure, an advocate of the faith and medical professionals.
