Carl Andresen

Carl Heinrich Andresen (born July 28, 1909 in Agerskov ( North Schleswig ), † June 21, 1985 in Göttingen ) was a German Protestant theologian and church historian .

Life

Carl Andresen studied Protestant theology at the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen and the Friedrich Wilhelms University in Berlin . From 1932 to 1940 he worked as a pastor in Sörup , from 1940 to 1947 in military service and as a Soviet prisoner of war. From 1948 to 1956 he worked as a hospital chaplain in Kiel . In 1951 he was at the University of Kiel for Doctor of theology doctorate. He completed his habilitation in Kiel in 1953 and became a private lecturer . In 1956 he became full professor for New Testament and Old Church History including Christian Archeology at the Philipps University of Marburg . In 1961 he went to the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen as a professor of church history , where he also founded a Christian-Archaeological Department . In 1977 he retired .

Andresen became a member of the Mommsen Society (1955), the Studiorum Novi Testamenti Societas (1958) and the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen (1962). He was also one of the founders of the Patristic Commission in 1960 . He was co-editor of the Lexicon of the Old World . In the field of church history he was considered one of the most prominent scholars in Germany. In addition, he dealt with Christian archeology. His academic students include Gernot Wießner and his long-time assistant Adolf Martin Ritter . One daughter is Henriette Piper .
