Mommsen Society

The Mommsen Society is a scientific society based in Freiburg im Breisgau , in which German-speaking researchers in the field of ancient studies ( ancient history , classical philology , classical archeology ) have come together.

history

The association is named after the German ancient historian and Nobel Prize winner Theodor Mommsen . It currently has around 750 scientists. As a rule, the prerequisite for admission is a completed doctorate in one of the archaeological subjects, whereby the dissertation and at least one other scientific article must have already been published. Since 2009 it has been possible for doctoral candidates to apply for young membership, which can be converted into full membership after successful doctoral studies.

The company was founded in 1950 at the instigation of Bruno Snell ; The foundation was preceded by a meeting of prominent German classical scholars in Hinterzarten from August 29 to September 2, 1949. As a rule, the society holds a scientific conference every second year, which also serves as a general meeting .

To promote the next generation of scientists, the association has been awarding the Bruno Snell Prize since 1989 for special achievements in the study of Greco-Roman antiquity. For the young members mentioned above, i. H. the doctoral candidates within the company, there have also been the Walter de Gruyter seminars since 2010, led by internationally renowned scientists, as well as funding grants for conference activities and the organization of own workshops for young talents.

On January 7, 1990, a Mommsen Society was also founded in the GDR , which was intended as a sister society to the West German Mommsen Society. The first chairman was Jürgen Dummer , managing director Gerhard Perl . The two clubs were merged in 1991.
