Ernst-Richard Schwinge (born September 4, 1934 in Berlin-Charlottenburg ) is a German classical philologist .

Life

Ernst-Richard Schwinge was born in Berlin in 1934 . After attending elementary school, he became a pupil at the old grammar school in Oldenburg in 1946 , where he passed the matriculation examination in 1955. He began his studies in the summer semester of 1955; He studied classical philology at the universities of Tübingen, Munich and Hamburg, as well as philosophy and German literature. He put in early 1960 in Hamburg , the first state examination in the subjects Greek and Latin from, in December of that year he was at the University of Hamburg with the dissertation The position of Trachiniae in the work of Sophocles to Dr. phil. In the summer semester of 1965, both of them moved to the University of Tübingen , where Schwinge completed his habilitation in Classical Philology in January 1967 with the work The Use of Stitch Mystery in the Dramas of Euripides . From 1967 to 1973 Schwinge was a university lecturer in Tübingen, was then appointed as an adjunct professor and in the academic year 1974/75 he was Vice Dean of the Department of Classical and Cultural Studies.

In 1976 Schwinge was appointed full professor for Classical Philology, especially Graecistics, at the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel . Here he was vice dean from 1987 to 1989 and from 1991 to 1992, and from 1989 to 1991 dean of the Faculty of Philosophy. In 1993 Schwinge became a full member of the Joachim Jungius Society of Sciences in Hamburg. From 1993 to 1995 he was chairman of the Mommsen Society , the association of German researchers in the field of Greco-Roman antiquity. Schwinge retired in 1999; his successor was Lutz Käppel . In 2005 Schwinge was appointed senior member of the Hamburg Academy of Sciences in Hamburg .

Schwinge has been married since 1964 and has two children.

In his work, Schwinge mainly deals with the Greek tragedy. He wrote 87 articles in this area for the Lexicon of the Old World . He also wrote writings on Homeric epics, ancient comedy, Greek historiography, Hellenistic poetry, Greek poetics and the reception of antiquity, especially in Goethe's time.
