Christian Lütjohann (born August 4, 1846 in Fegetasche near Plön , † April 8, 1884 in Kiel ) was a German classical philologist .

Life

Lütjohann attended the Plön Gymnasium (today Plön Gymnasium ) and then studied classical philology, history and geography at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel (with Otto Ribbeck and Alfred von Gutschmid ) from 1864 . From 1868 to 1869 he studied at the University of Leipzig , where Friedrich Ritschl had a decisive influence on him.

After military service in the Franco-German War (1870/71), Lütjohann completed his probationary year at the high school in Kiel and in 1873 went to the high school in Flensburg, where he was employed as a full teacher. In 1874/1875 he took a vacation to collate the works of little-edited writers in Italy .

1876 he became a senior teacher at the high school to Greifswald . At the University of Greifswald , after his habilitation , he held regular lectures in the same year and came into contact with Ulrich von Wilamowitz-Moellendorff , who held him in high regard. He arranged for Lütjohann to collaborate on the Monumenta Germaniae Historica , for which Lütjohann was responsible for the edition of the letters and poems of Sidonius Apollinaris .

On April 1, 1880, Lütjohann again moved to the Royal High School in Kiel. An extraordinary professorship in Classical Philology became vacant at Christian-Albrechts-Universität in the winter semester of 1883/1884. Gustav Löwe , Christian Lütjohann and Theodor Birt were on the list of appointments . After Löwe refused, Lütjohann received the offer and accepted it on February 19, 1884. Already on April 8, 1884, shortly after the beginning of the semester, Lütjohann died of a nervous fever after a long illness.

Lütjohann was particularly concerned with Latin literature. In his dissertation (1869) he dealt with the elegiac Properz , and in further studies the writings of Apuleius and Cicero . He could not complete the edition of the Epistulae et carmina by Sidonius Apollinaris because of his early death. It was finished by Theodor Mommsen and appeared in 1887.
