August Wilmanns

August Wilmanns (born March 25, 1833 in Vegesack near Bremen , † October 27, 1917 in Berlin ) was a German librarian and classical philologist .

Life

August Wilmanns comes from the Hanseatic merchant and scholar family Wilmanns; his father was a doctor and his grandfather August Christian Wilmann's bailiff in Vegesack near Bremen. He studied classical philology at the University of Bonn , where he was also a member of the Alemannia Bonn fraternity , and received his doctorate on August 3, 1863 with a thesis on Varro . From 1865 to 1869 he was educating the children of the Prussian ambassador at the Vatican in Rome .

On January 26, 1870, he became the first full-time head librarian of the Freiburg University Library . On July 9, 1870, he received his habilitation for Classical Philology at the University of Freiburg and became a private lecturer , and on February 11, 1871, he was appointed associate professor. As early as March 6, 1871, he became full professor of classical philology in Innsbruck , April 1, 1873 in Kiel and April 1, 1874 in Königsberg . There he also headed the university library as senior librarian.

From 1875 to 1886 he was senior librarian at the Göttingen University Library , which owes him numerous reforms, and professor of classical philology at the University of Göttingen. From January 6, 1886 to October 1, 1905, Wilmanns headed the Royal Library in Berlin as general director, which under his leadership enjoyed a significant boom.

August Wilmanns died in Berlin in 1917 at the age of 84 and was buried in the old St. Matthew Cemetery in Schöneberg . The grave has not been preserved.

Wilmanns bequeathed the manuscripts and incunabula from his possession to the State Library in Berlin, and in 1918 the Freiburg University Library acquired his private library with more than 4,000 volumes from his nephew Alfred Gercke , Professor of Classical Philology in Wroclaw.
