Karl Jax (born November 25, 1885 in Linz , † February 10, 1968 in Innsbruck ) was an Austrian classical philologist .

Life

After graduating from the Academic Gymnasium in Linz, Jax studied Classical Philology, History and Archeology at the University of Innsbruck with Ernst Kalinka , Anton Zingerle , Friedrich Stolz , Alois Walde and Rudolf von Scala . In February 1910 he passed the teaching examination and began the high school trial service in Innsbruck and Linz. In October 1910, Jax was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD . He received his first permanent position in 1911 as a “real teacher and professor” at the secondary school in Kufstein. In 1921 he switched to the high school in Innsbruck.

In addition to working in school, Jax continued to work in research. In 1933 he completed his habilitation at the University of Innsbruck and held lectures there on a part-time basis. In autumn 1936 he was appointed to the chair of Classical Philology at the University of Innsbruck as the successor to Julius Jüthner . Since it was a first call, Jax was appointed as associate professor. On October 30, 1945 he was appointed full professor. After he was Senator from 1946 to 1947 and Dean of the Faculty of Arts from 1947 to 1949, he was retired in 1957 .

In his academic teaching, Jax had three focal points: The methodology of ancient language teaching, Latin grammar and style, and so-called real antiquity. These activities grew out of his decades of experience in middle school and high school teaching.

Jax's scientific publications outgrew his teaching activities and were tailored to the needs of the high school and university public. In addition to several essays on antiquity, he wrote the Latin exercise book , which first appeared in Vienna in 1924 and had five editions by 1956. Together with his teacher Ernst Kalinka, he created the Kurzgefaßte Latin Sprachlehre, also published in 1924, with exercises .

Since 1945 he was an honorary member of the Catholic student association KÖHV Alpinia Innsbruck in the ÖCV .
