Paul Handel

Paul Handel (born December 14, 1927 in Mannheim ; † April 18, 2011 in Niederndorf ) was an Austrian classical philologist of German origin.

Life

Paul Handel studied Classical Philology at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg , where he received his doctorate in 1951 under Otto Regenbogen with the dissertation Observations on the Epic Technique of Apollonios Rhodios (Munich 1954). For 1952/1953 he received a travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute . From the winter semester of 1956/57 he worked as a research assistant at the University of Heidelberg, completed his habilitation in 1957 and was appointed adjunct professor in 1963. In 1964 he followed a call to full professor at the University of Innsbruck , where he taught until his retirement.

Paul Handel was particularly concerned with the literary technique of Greek authors. In his dissertation he devoted himself to the Hellenistic epic poet Apollonios Rhodios, in his habilitation thesis to the Attic comedy poet Aristophanes . In addition, he wrote articles for the Realencyclopedia of classical antiquity .
