Robert Muth

Robert J. Muth (born January 1, 1916 in Innsbruck ; † November 25, 2008 ibid) was an Austrian classical philologist who worked at the University of Innsbruck .

Life

After graduating from the Innsbruck Academic High School, Robert Muth studied classical philology and archeology in Innsbruck and Vienna from 1935 . During this time he also became a member of the KÖHV Leopoldina Innsbruck in the ÖCV , of which he was a member until his death. His academic teachers included Albin Lesky and Karl Jax , whose colleague he was later in Innsbruck, as well as Ernst Kalinka , Julius Jüthner , Ludwig Radermacher , Hans Gerstinger , Johannes Mewaldt , Karl Mras and Mauriz Schuster . In July 1939 - before the outbreak of the Second World War - Muth received his doctorate in Innsbruck, and in February 1940 he passed the teaching examination for Latin and Greek. In 1941 he was called up as a paramedic for military service, but remained stationed in Innsbruck and was able to take on a teaching position at the university from 1942. In 1943 he was employed as a research assistant. He achieved his habilitation before the end of the war in March 1945. He then worked as a private lecturer and in 1948 founded the journal Anzeiger for Classical Studies , which is still published today. In 1950 he was appointed associate professor to fill the position of Albin Lesky, who had left for Vienna. Since then he has also acted as director of the Innsbruck Institute for Classical Philology. The University of Friborg offered him after a stay as a visiting professor in the summer semester 1950 a full professorship at, but rejected the courage.

In 1958 Robert Muth was appointed full professor in Innsbruck. In the following decades he was extensively involved in the administration of the university. In 1960/1961 and 1968/1969 he was dean of the Faculty of Philosophy, and in the academic year 1970/1971 he was prorector of the university. Muth also headed the Institute for Physical Education and the federal institute of the same name until a full professor took this position in 1969. His achievements in research, teaching and administration were recognized by the state: He received the Great Silver Decoration for Services to the Republic of Austria and the Great Federal Cross of Merit . Even after his retirement (1986) he remained active in research and got involved in his local environment. At the age of 93, the municipality of Alpbach awarded him their badge of honor. Robert Muth died on November 25, 2008 in Innsbruck.

Robert Muth is particularly well known in science for his research on ancient religion and philosophy. His best-known work is the introduction to the Greek and Roman religion (Darmstadt 1988), which appeared in 1998 in an expanded form. In 1947, Muth founded the journal Anzeiger for ancient studies .

In the course of his life he became an honorary member of another ÖCV association ( KÖHV Alpinia-Innsbruck ) and of two SchwStV associations ( AV Helvetia Oenipontana and AV Berchtoldia ).
