Hans Gerstinger

Hans Gerstinger (born December 23, 1885 in Großhaslau ; † July 2, 1971 in Graz ) was an Austrian classical philologist and university professor .

Life

Gerstinger visited the Stiftsgymnasium Melk and studied after graduation Classical Philology , History and German Studies at the University of Vienna , where he in 1912 to Dr. phil. received his doctorate. In 1913 he passed the teaching exams for Latin , Greek and German and then worked as a high school teacher in Vienna. In 1914 he joined the Vienna court library . Gerstinger did military service from 1914 to 1918. From 1923 he was head of the papyrus collection at the Austrian National Library . In 1928 he completed his habilitation in classical philology, Byzantine studies and papyrus studies . His specialty were Greek and Byzantine papyri. From 1931 to 1936 he was director of the manuscript and papyrus collection of the Austrian National Library. In 1934 he became an associate professor at the University of Vienna. He received professorships in Prague and Innsbruck, which he refused. From 1936 he was a member of the examination commission for the secondary school teaching post in Vienna and Graz and from 1945 its director. In 1940 he became a full professor at the University of Graz , where he was dean from 1946–1947 and rector from 1947–1948 . Also in 1940 he became a corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences ; He received his actual membership in 1949. From 1948 he was director of the Federal Institute for Physical Education in Graz, from 1949 a member of the Austrian Archaeological Institute .
