Ursula Gärtner (philologist)

Ursula Anne Elisabeth Gärtner (born January 7, 1965 in Heidelberg ) is a German classical philologist .

After graduating from high school in 1984, the daughter of classical philologist Hans Armin Gärtner studied Protestant theology , classical philology , Middle Latin and Hebrew at the universities of Heidelberg , Freiburg and Basel until 1991 . She also received a Robert S. Marshall Fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh in 1988 . From 1991 to 1992 a doctoral scholarship from the German National Academic Foundation followed . With a dissertation on "content and function of the parables in Valerius Flaccus " was in 1992 a doctorate .

From 1993 to 2000 gardeners worked as a research assistant and later as an assistant at the Chair of Latin Studies of Ekkehard Strengthening of the Institute of Classical Studies of the University of Leipzig . The habilitation took place in 2000 on the subject of “' Βεργίλλιος, ἄλλος Ὅμηρος '. On the aftermath of Virgil in the Greek literature of the imperial era ”. This was followed by a senior assistant at the University of Leipzig until 2001 and as a professor at the universities of Mainz and Potsdam until 2002 . In Potsdam in 2002 she was appointed to the chair of classical philology as the successor to Peter Riemer .

From 2004 to 2009 she was often involved in committee work, initiated the Potsdam Latin Day (since 2005), which has had an additional date at irregular intervals since 2012, and the Brandenburger Antike-Denkwerk (2007-2011), which will be continued in 2014-2017 - both times funded by the Robert Bosch Foundation . From 2005 to 2009 she was also a board member of the Mommsen Society and since 2005 has been the deputy chairwoman of the Berlin and Brandenburg regional association of the German Association of Classical Philology (DAV).

Gärtner has held the chair for Classical Philology / Latin Studies at the University of Graz since March 2016 and is on leave at the University of Potsdam.

In the course of her habilitation, she also made a contribution to the Posthomerica of Quintus Smyrnaeus , on which she wrote the first German translation including commentary since the 1866 edition by Johann Jakob Christian Donner, held in Vosssch style .
