Central complexes

The university is divided into the following three university complexes (I – III):

  • University Complex I Am Neuen Palais : The central campus of the university with the maximum auditorium is in the immediate vicinity of Sanssouci Park . In the Communs, the representative outbuildings of the New Palais, there are some institutes of the Philosophical Faculty and lecture rooms. The baroque buildings from the 18th century also house the presidium and parts of the university administration. In the other buildings from different epochs there are further institutes of the Philosophical Faculty, parts of the Department of Sports and Health Sciences as well as the university outpatient department.
  • University complex II Golm : The institutes of the mathematical and natural sciences and the human sciences faculty are located in Potsdam-Golm, where one of the largest science parks in the region has arisen with the construction of modern research buildings. Three Max Planck and two Fraunhofer Institutes as well as the GO: IN start-up center have settled here.
  • University complex III Babelsberg am Griebnitzsee : The Griebnitzsee campus on the city limits of Berlin, not far from the traditional Babelsberg film studios, is the seat of the law and economics and social science faculties. The Institute for Computer Science and Computational Science is also located here and benefits from the proximity to the Digital Engineering Faculty, the first fully privately financed faculty in Germany at a state university. The faculty is jointly supported by the University of Potsdam and the Hasso Plattner Institute for Software Systems Technology .

Since 2000 the Golm campus has been expanded with several new buildings, funded by the European Regional Development Fund (EFRE) and the State of Brandenburg. On the Am Neuen Palais campus , the entire area west of the Am Neuen Palais street will also be redesigned by 2020 through extensive new construction measures. The Griebnitzsee campus is also being expanded with new buildings from the Digital Engineering Faculty.

Other university locations

  • Mulberry Allee: Botanical Garden . Teaching and research facility of the Institute for Biochemistry and Biology. Training in botany.
  • Karl-Marx-Straße in Babelsberg: Professorships for economics are housed in one of the representative villas.
  • Bergholz-Rehbrücke : The Institute for Nutritional Science of the University of Potsdam is also located in the building of the German Institute for Nutritional Research Potsdam-Rehbrücke ( DIfE ).

Historic Buildings

Some parts of the university are housed in historical buildings, some of which have even been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List . Some buildings on the Am Neuen Palais campus are part of the ensemble of the palace of the same name, which is located in Sanssouci Park . The two communs were built together with the New Palais during the reign of Friedrich II between 1766 and 1769. West of the southern commune is the Imperial Marstall , which Kaiser Wilhelm II had completed by 1894. It contained not only stables, but also a riding arena - which later became the maximum auditorium . The building, based on the Marstall, opposite the Nordcommun, which houses the site's cafeteria , was built between 1954 and 1958 for the college of education .

The Babelsberg and Golm locations are also of historical interest. The oldest buildings of the Golmer Institute were built in the 1930s for the air intelligence department of the Air Force , including four barracks (House 1, 3, 5, 7), a casino (House 4), a boiler house (House 2) and three vehicles - and equipment halls (building 8, 10, 11). In the center, a rectangular area 240 meters long and 45 meters wide was laid out, which served as a parade ground. After the end of the Second World War , Stasi cadres were trained there from 1951 onwards at the newly founded university of the Ministry for State Security .

The law faculty and the economics and social science faculty of the university are housed in the former presidential and administrative building of the German Red Cross (1939/1940) on the Griebnitzsee campus in Babelsberg. After the end of the war and the Potsdam Conference , the group of Soviet occupation troops in Germany used the location as a high command. More classrooms and buildings were in the 1950s, immediately after the Babelsberg Palace for the Academy of Law and Political Sciences of the GDR erected. They have since been torn down. The three student residences there, which were built between 1949 and 1951, are to be maintained until at least 2040.

In 2016, the University of Potsdam was the first university to receive the EU's "Human Resources Excellence in Research" (HRS4R) certificate.

internationalization

The University of Potsdam has developed an internationalization strategy that is carried out as a cross-sectional task by the university management, accompanied by the internal university advisory board for internationalization and is linked to the internationalization strategy of the state of Brandenburg. In particular, through cooperation with countries such as Poland, France and Israel, “ foreign language skills, intercultural competence and international mobility ” should be improved. The university maintains partnerships with institutions all over the world and particularly supports partnerships in defined priority regions (Australia, France, Israel, Poland, Russia, Turkey, USA, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica and Argentina as well as the southern Africa region) in order to encourage third-party funding . In addition, two universities were defined as strategic partners: Macquarie University , Tel Aviv University .

The University of Potsdam is the leading partner of the "European Digital UniverCity (EDUC)", one of 17 pilot university alliances of the European Union. With partners in France, Italy, Hungary and the Czech Republic, EDUC aims to create an integrated European university where students, researchers and administrators across five countries work together.

The percentage of foreign students is currently 14% of the student body, and 18% of the master’s students. In terms of the number of international courses, the university is currently in 2nd place in Germany, in the number of mobile lecturers in 2nd place and in the number of foreign students among the completed doctorates in 3rd place of 32 large universities in Germany (profile data on the internationality of German universities 2019).

The internationalization of the university was given a special status by the appointment of a Vice President for International Affairs in 2011, which is currently being perceived by Florian Schweigert.
